Periodically, while I’m in FSD with or without navigation on, I’ll try to change lanes by activating the turn signal. No other cars near me in either lane and the truck won’t change lanes. I have to turn off FSD, break, or override the steering to change lanes.

I bug report it but no changes yet with software updates.

This works for me. The only time I'm denied is when it needs to be in the current lane to satisfy navigation (i.e., there's a turn ahead).

Yes, as other have said, in some circumstances the lane change will be denied "BUT" if I compare with my Model Y using the same HW4 and same FSD release (which we know is somewhat different), in most cases the lane change takes a very loooonnnng time to make as in the Model Y it is initiated almost instantaneously.

You can nudge/coax it over without a disengagement if you have steady enough hands. Somewhere near halfway of the lane change, you can let FSD take the wheel fully back. Same with the accelerator. They are a bit sensitive, but very doable for those who have practiced.

Not recommended for newbies though.

Ive noticed that hands off it will completely ignore turn signal lane change requests sometimes as described above. However if you are hands on and put on the signal you can coax it over as you describe, but there is no such thing as a quick lane change on fsd unless you disengage or are in hurry mode and it initiates it itself (every 2.5 seconds)

That last 2.9 update upset a lot of CT's. I'm thinking the next update should fix a lot of things ?

In hurry mode I found it insists on staying in the left lane. I put it in the right lane and every minute it will put the signal on and insist on going into the left lane.

We need to also remember that our standard for the most safe lane change, and FSD's definition are going to be different lol

You must have chosen default “Chill” mode, which minimizes lane changes. Switch to “Standard” or “Hurry” mode

what works for you? Am I doing something wrong? Also, it’s not about needing to be in a particular lane for navigation. It’s almost like my corgis when they’re just stubborn but not lol for this.

I mean: on a multi-lane highway, selecting a turn-button on the squircle activates the turn signal, and then changes lanes. When I use "hurry" mode it seems to change lanes every 30 seconds lol

Yes. My truck has the same occasional obstinacy! Like you, I’ve reported it many times and what I’ve said and what I think needs to happen is that input (even though Elon thinks it’s error) from the driver he needs to be treated as an edict, unless it’s unsafe!

If I want to be in that lane over there, I’m not asking the truck’s opinion about whether I wanna be in that lane or not; I’m telling it what to do. Delaying briefly because of a safety issue is fine; not complying is unacceptable and that’s what it does frequently.

Also, I need the ability to without disengaging FSD have the car comply with my steering inputs. If I want to hug the right or left of the lane (or more likely— not do that!), it needs to respond to my inputs without breaking out of FSD.

[Kyle from Out of Spec just did a deep dive video at Rivian where they have a new feature called “collaborative steering” that does exactly what I’ve described above. Kyle LOVED it and it seems to be nicely balanced to favor lane centering while allowing the driver to make adjustments. Tesla needs this!]

You can sort of coax the vehicle into doing this a little bit if you apply just the right amount of consistent pressure— you might be able to get it to slowly move over a micrometer at a time, but it’s not satisfactory.

A bit of this is just arrogance on Tesla‘s part if your mantra is that “ any user input is error” really drives everything you do then you don’t understand that some of us are actually very good drivers and superior, buy a wide margin, to your AI. It’s fairly annoying.

In the meantime, I don’t know, I feel like a Targaryen trying to get Vhagar to do what I want him to do! Maybe you have to say it in High Valerian?

LEO! “DOHAERIS!!!” <obey>

Oh well, I tried! RIP Lucerys and Arrax.
