Anybody have any information and more importantly, are we stuck paying this DMV fee next month? I just received in the mail my "ALTERNATIVE FUEL VEHICLE FEE" notification effective October 1.

I pay one annually here in GA. It's to make up for tax not collected with gas for roads etc. (.33 a gallon here). Though I think the calculation should better consider the mpg equivalent. As of now i the charge equates tome getting the same mpg as an f350 super diesel.

I'm here in GA, too, the whole idea of that fee is counterproductive.

There is a desire to encourage people to drive more fuel-efficient vehicles with low or no emissions - not mandate, encourage - through policy, which I think is good policy. Then the government turns around and penalizes the exact behavior they sought to encourage in the first place!

I think it's like what $260. The gas tax in GA is .33 a gallon. So they're charging us the equivalent of 787 gallons of gas consumption a year. If we were super generous and assumed 50mpge, I'd have to drive 39k miles a year to cover that. Which is nuts.

Here is TX the regular registration annual fee is about 75. EVs get an additional 200, so 275 a year for EV registration. Seems a little high to me, considering I only drive about 10k miles a year. In my opinion they should just get rid of gas tax and just tax everyone based on the mileage you rack up each year. So when it’s time to pay registration we submit a mileage verification.

Just had to renew my annual registration in TN and it was an additional $200 due to the new fee. Infuriating. This just reduced the annual financial benefits of driving an EV though it's still favorable.....for now.

Here in Iowa, EV’s pay $900 each/year to make up for “road tax.” Not much incentive.

Wtf? Now a penalty for driving an environmentally friendly vehicle?
The big oil lobby will stop at nothing to slow down electrification. A slower transition is worth BILLIONS of dollars per year to them and the speed at which electrification is happening, and projected to continue happening, has a direct impact on their share price today.

The big oil lobby learned decades ago how to operate covertly, by funneling money through non-profit special interest groups and think tanks who do their bidding.

We pay $200 annually in Ohio when you get your tag renewal. If you renew for three years you pay $600. I am happy to pay it. They need it to keep there roads in good shape. Well they try anyway. If there was no tax then the roads would be awful

There was almost a blanket Federal fee for all EV's and hybrids on top of the the random State fees, but it was removed from the OBBBA eventually. A fee is a tax without true representation.

Eff Sam Graves.

  • The origin of the EV/hybrid fee: In 2025, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Sam Graves (R-Mo.) proposed a provision to include federal registration fees for electric and hybrid vehicles in the OBBBA budget reconciliation package.
    • The fees were set at $250 annually for electric vehicles and $100 for hybrids.
    • The goal was to ensure that EV owners contribute to the Highway Trust Fund, which is primarily financed by gas taxes.
Rep. Graves, stated they would try to reintroduce the fees later in the legislative process.

This is one of those “cutting your nose off to spite your face” situations we have created about “Saving the Environment.” No one actually cares if you drive an alternative fuel vehicle or not. The government wants its money. That is all.

Yes don’t know how they calculate the fee, it was $100 for my Model 3, $160 for my Lightning, and now $122 for the Model Y annually?

Maybe overall weight.

But yes try to pay yourself with not hitting gas stations and the state gets your $$$ in the end.

That’s because the incentives worked very well, there are a ton of EVs on the road. And car manufacturers are building very competitive EVs now. The still need to pay for the roads, and with less ICEs(correct pluralization?), they need to charge for lost gas tax. I do think they are charging incorrectly though.

An easy fix would be to just submit your odometer reading, and pay for what you drove, out of state would just be a Tax on EV chargers. A flat rate per car is rediculas. If I own 10 EVs, I can’t drive them all at the same time. It should be based on mileage actually driven.
