I am personally torn. On one hand I would love to gain 2-3% range on the highway, eliminate a little noise, and not have to worry about them getting destroyed. On the other hand I might be trending towards the older inflexible stereo type.

On my M3 I would feel weird not having them. The recent blind spot indicator change was very helpful, but I think Tesla could improve the UI somehow which would make me commit to ditching the mirrors. I think the mirror emulation layout on the screen should be horizontal instead of stacked on the screen. Maybe even having the rearview camera pop up in the middle. This would be more intuitive for me. Maybe have an option to keep the mirror views up even if you are not changing lanes.

I think the other thing that would help ditch the mirrors is the fact the 4 other cars that I occasionally drive still have mirrors. Once these vehicles expire it will be easier. IDK maybe I would consider ditching the just the passenger mirror, then the drivers side as a transition.

Don't get me started on the turn signal problem. If a simple AI can't figure out that you have changed lanes and cancel the turn signal after the lane change we have problems. Yes I am that guy with a turn signal flashing for miles. The mirror popups are rather small and I don't always realize the signal is still active.

Admin addendum - here's a look at Cybertruck without side mirrors:

The mirrors are a really bad case of "the best part is no part". I thank my lucky stars that they couldn't get the laws changed on side mirrors. The amount of change that you have to make to your driving habits to drive a cybertruck is pretty high. Rearview mirror is on the center display (when the correct thing to do was a screen in the rearview, but again, the best part is no part). The other assumption that plagues tesla vehicle interfaces is that the human driving the vehicle isn't needed, because it drives itself. "All input is error" is another phrase they throw around at tesla.

Similarly, the only correct place for a display for sideview cameras that would replace sideview mirrors would be the A pillar. Expecting drivers to look at the center screen to see their side view is super arrogant honestly. If this had been the case (no side mirrors plus no A pillar side view display), that likely would have pushed me over the edge to look elsewhere for a vehicle. No stalks is a big enough change from how cars should be operated.

On top of all of that, even if you are cool with the rearview being on the center display, there's no washer on the rear camera, so in wet/snowy/salty conditions, you just won't have a usable rearview. So, I will definitely be keeping those side view mirrors just as they are, haha.

Regardless of the laws I am old-fashioned, I have tried it in my model S to get used to the rear view camera but it is a bird's eye and the distance is deceiving. I still find it more helpful to see through the mirrors than the cameras. I'm 43 years old Just for reference. I'm sure younger drivers that got used to this from the beginning may take them off and older drivers will keep them.

Good insight. The change over is the hardest. I think some cars may be going to dedicated screens, which would make switching cars harder.

I hear you. I'm 42 myself and with 26 years of doing something every day, it will be challenging to feel comfortable doing something different.

Spot on. I find them disorientating and I am not sure which to fully trust. Sensory overload. But I think if I removed them it might be better.

Not having that safety net will force us to relearn how to be aware of our surroundings quicker. Bye-Bye training wheels.

You have a point, remove them and force yourself to get used to it. Crash a few times if needed to learn that way, LOL.

I am from Utah, so I might remove my passenger mirror first. This could be a good transition or maybe prolong the learning curve IDK. I wish Tesla could customize the mirror interface. So when I turn the right turn indicator only the passenger mirror comes up.

I looked a while ago for the M3 removal kit, but there wasn't anything great. Plus my M3 is a lease.

No Doubt in my mind. Here only one mirror is required, but I'd remove all of them on delivery (assuming side hole covers are available). Maybe get a 1" or 2" round bubble mirror to be legally compliant and tuck it somewhere inconspicuous (or magnetic and put it on if I'm stopped) . Then I'd start thinking about the wiper delete. It would have to be a really bad experience to make me go through the trouble of putting them back on.

We got 4 feet of snow at my house over the last week. The rearview camera on both of my vehicles has been completely useless, covered in snow/slush/salt. Backing out of my driveway, I normally look fully at the camera. This last week the camera image was 98% obscured and completely unhelpful, so I relied entirely on my rear view mirror.

Unless they come up with a way to self-clean the rearview camera, the rearview mirror is absolutely essential in snowy areas. It's actually going to be a pain to need to open the tonneau to back out of spots and then close it after, but will be required in winter.
