There is much FUD. I have had two magnets on my truck for four+ months with no corrosion. Will get some pics and post them, maybe I'll even record a video removing them just in case there is a surprise - or not.
I guess, like many things, the 'quality' of a product can make a difference as well...

I wonder if having stronger or weaker magnetic backing makes a difference also... Does the stronger one 'pull' or keep metallic flakes, dust and debris OR is it better because it isn't as likely to allow something under it AND there would be less 'shifting' to grind stuff around?

My wife had a smaller magnet (ribbon type) on the back and it didn't have any issues, but I did notice dirt accumulating on the 'edges' of it (so I took it off and did a quick cleaning and put it back on), but it didn't do anything underneath... BUT of course someone either stole it or it 'fell off' somehow...

Also, I saw a lot of folks saying they are switching to vinyl stickers... Well, beware! If they are cheaply made ones, they too can end up leaving 'ghost' images when finally removed...
I'd rather put a magnet on than a sticker. But if you must, prior to sticking, clean with IPA to remove all (road) fat/grease and dirt - you don't want to trap that. IPA evaporates fast so no chance that this get trapped.

I think the other issue is road debris getting stuck around the edges and accumulating resulting in rust.
This is probably the main thing causing the staining and corrosion there is metallic dust on all roads constantly being produced and becoming air born by all vehicles on the road especially the gasoline and diesel type. from catalytic converters and the exhaust emissions also brake dust and brake drums and rotors this dust inevitably will accumulate on and around the magnet and it's this dust plus moisture that will react with the SS and stain or change the surface finish.
But I think putting a protective film between the SS and magnet should work I would recommend it be a film that is applied to the whole panel at least extend the film around the magnet not just under the magnet it will still attract the dust but with an insulating barrier that should prevent any staining.
protective film = solution:cool:

I feel like an idiot…
Decided to put advertising magnets on my CT. Happened to take them off to wash the truck after a month and my heart sunk…rust and corrosion.

I was able to clean most of it off with liquid barkeepers friend followed by windex but there are a couple of small white spots left that have a slight rough texture to them. I am planning on using a cordless polisher with barkeepers friend to see if it will just take a little more than elbow grease to polish it off.
Does anyone have any recommendations for removing the rest of these small spots or know what exactly is going on? I like to assume the spots are just superficial corrosion with good SS underneath still…

It's a TRUCK......Try BRASSO and a SCOTCH BRITE.
I was Australia's top car restorer in '86.....most of my paintworks were handcut using BRASSO ! Go for it!
If that don't appeal, ask Tesla what they would do do do da da da da! 'ls all l want to say to you'

I did the same thing! I just had my CT detailed and found the previous smaller magnet left some rust spots. I want to try to remove the spots and wrap the tailgate with a larger sign.

Dude. I tried IPA... I tried a stout... I tried a pilsner... None of them evaporated fast.

Data point: I had a 12"x12" vinyl sticker that I placed on my CB in July when I picked it up. It started to bubble a bit, so I just peeled it off. Other than adhesive residue, no marks or damage to the steel after 4 months of PNW driving.
