It seems flying is becoming more and more challenging. Are we having more problems with our air travels, Including safety? It seems like it. iSo I’m asking again the question of would you prefer to drive in your even more comfortable cybertruck in a trip similar to a Houston to Colorado trip. Our recent flight to Rio had a problem with the engine that could not be fixed until the next morning some 12 hours later. Got me to thinking about driving vs. flying (not Rio of course) again.
So in consideration of the following:
Drive time to airport parking lot through Houston traffic
waiting for shuttle and schlepting the bags onto shuttle
Shuttle to the terminal with stopping for all the others to get on the shuttle
schelpting bags oneself more to check in
waiting through the TSA inspection
Waiting to board
waiting on plane at the gate
waiting in line of planes to take off
waiting to deplane
waiting for baggge to be unloaded at carousel
schlepting the bags onto a shuttle for the rent car
waiting for an agent at rent car place
schlepting the bags to the rent car
be confused about how to get out of the airport

Whew! that’s a lot of schlepting and waiting
what do y’all think about it? Have you figured out a maximum drive vs. fly distance?

6 hours is the cutoff for me. Unless I need my vehicle for a family trip. Over 6 hours, I fly, under I drive.

I fly over 60 times per year. I think it has gotten easier relative to the beginning of the Patriot Act. Especially with services like Pre-Check and Clear.

People get too crazy with the "I need 2 hour layover" or "Be at the airport 2 hours before flight".

I do 30 min layovers and get to the airport about 10-20 min before boarding starts. I do look at the wait times beforehand.

I haven't flown anywhere since a few years before I retired in 2018. People would fly to meet me at my office. Since then, I would drive just for the pleasure of driving cross country, i.e. Virginia to west coast or points in between. My greatest ambition for driving is to chase trains. Model railroading is my retired hobby now.

If no time constraints, drive
That’s just me though, as I’ve tried to enjoy the spaces between flyover regions.

With FSD and scheduled charge stops, honestly its about equvalent to taking an amtrak. Regarding distance or time… if it were just me, and time were not a factor, id choose the cheapest route. If time mattered or flight price was negligible to the time it took to drive, id fly. More often than not if there is a companion involved, its flying if its >6hrs of driving

Put those troubles behind and Bajit.com. Put that truck with a truck transport. Get on that plane. Its so easy.

If it were cheaper to do that than to rent a car at the destination then would do for sure. Problem is rhat there are sufficient rental cars for less than $25/day most of the time

My only wish: I can fly.

I definitley prefer to drive no matter the time or distance. After I retire next year I’ll probably cross to other continents by sailboat. @REM are you prior military using MAC flights? I might use those occasionally too.

agree as FSD has changed everything

now we actually consider driving
Going farther, less hotels
It’s a paradigm shift

until FSD, I hated driving more than 10 hours
Now with FSD, I love long distant road trips

If overall travel time is similar, I'll drive.

If it takes a little longer to drive, I'll still drive because of how often flights are cancelled or delayed.

If it's too far for that, I'll begrudgingly fly.
