You shouldn't feel the need to defend against a single employeees mistake of the moment.

A hubcap was installed improperly, big deal. Those who work on wheels and tires should be more careful, and check their work, but the same thing happens at professional tire shops across America on a daily basis.
I regularly comment on many EV forums and on social media for many EVs. But Tesla has taken a huge hit on image even without incidents like this. It's hard to get through people's heads that EVs are better.

You have a big imagination. Tesla owns the best-selling car in the world, gas or electric, taking the long-standing crown away from Toyota this year. This happened about the same time a bunch of very imaginative people were claiming Elon had permanently and deeply marred Tesla's reputation.

I don't think it would be possible to have the best-selling car in the entire world if the damage was as significant as you claim. You achieve the best-selling car in the world by having the best reputation. People don't flock to companies with poor reputations.

The reports of Tesla's downfall are wholly made up from thin air. By turning everyday occurances into supposed significant harm. It's called making a mountain of a molehill and it's a very popular activity. That doesn't make it real.

Gordon Johnson, " Tesla has a demand problem" . Lol.

I can see him soon debating with Ross Gerber and pointing out how the Cybertruck is vaporware and the few they made have wheels flying off on the highway.

If you're only in your bubble you see no damage.

Of course Tesla has the best selling model in the world. Without Musks recent shenanigans they would be even higher.

Don't mistake what I'm saying. I have two Teslas and a CT reservation.

I also know most people had a favorable or neutral view of Tesla before Musks antics as of late. Since then it's been a struggle.

There's still plenty of people who don't care about Musk or politics to sell more cars. But there will be a lower upper limit because of him.

As a Tesla owner, Tesla reservation holder and Tesla shareholder I see it.

I would turn that around and say those who think a hubcap flying off causes significant damage to Tesla's reputation are living in a bubble that most new car buyers never even see. You are such a Tesla fan, and emotionally tied up in everything Tesla, that you naturally blow out of proportion insignificant events. They might be a big deal to you, but the average new car buyer has more rational things to think about.

Also, your claim that Tesla would sell more cars "without Musk's recent shenanigans" (whatever that's supossed to mean), implies that Tesla could have grown production at a faster rate otherwise. You can't sell cars you haven't manufactured! Maybe you could connect the dots as to how Musk's supposed "shenanigans" could have reduced production from what it would have been if Musk had been less expressive of who he was.

Just to be clear, I don't subscribe to the belief that Elon has to walk down someone elses idea of what the perfect business leader looks like. He is an individual and has just as much right to express his individuality as you or I. I don't believe he loses personal freedom just because he decided to be highly productive and work towards the betterment of humanity, rather than sit on his ass.

As a Tesla owner, Tesla reservation holder and Tesla shareholder I see it.
I am also a Tesla owner, Tesla reservation holder and Tesla shareholder and I have a different opinion.

People have been crying about brand damage since before TSLA went 20X. As an investor, you need a thick skin or you will be scared away from the best investments. A hubcap flying off changes absolutely nothing! Neither does Musk's Twitter comments. Without individuality, we would all become automans, reduced to saying approved things and all thinking alike. Life without any controversy, is no life at all. Controversy defines who we are and what we believe in.

Just because you believe someone holds a douchebag position, doesn't make it so. You are not the final arbitor of what is correct and proper, we all are, including Elon Musk. Societal norms are set by the collective and are modified by people's willingness to break with conformity. It's what defines what is normal and I celebrate those thinkers who are willing to push for a broader perspective and make people think about things on a more fundamental level.

I have yet to see anyone show me anything Elon has done that is not well supported by his veiw of the world (which is nothing more than the sum of his unique experiences and philosophy). Rigid conformity never changed the world for the better.

I didn't say this hubcap was "significant damage" to the brand. I said this incident is embarrassing. That's all. A true statement. (I've already heard the laughs from coworkers this morning etc.)

I then said, in a second comment, essentially that given Musks' controversial nature recently, it gets harder to defend Tesla amongst the Tesla hate. Again, a true statement.

I don't care what you think of Tesla, we both already love Tesla. I care what potential non-Tesla-owner buyers want. Many whom I have talked with who's changed their minds about going with Tesla have said they had gone with the inferior (my word) EV because of Musk. That's sad. Sad for them, and sad for us of course.

If you want to defend Musk that's on you. But you can't deny the effects of his actions have on the potential market size. The ceiling has certainly been lowered. I've certainly never met someone that said they aren't going with Tesla because Musk isn't controversial enough. (ad absurdum, I know)

I want Tesla to be the largest auto marker in the world. Right now that's Toyota at 11.5%. If Tesla gets to 12% with Musk's crap but could get to 13% without Musk's crap. I'll take 13% with a quite CEO. And I'll vote my shares accordingly.

Didn't he give 6 billion to end hunger also?
No one every took him up on the offer. They didn't have a plan on how to spend the money, just an estimate.

I think he was kind of a jerk about it, but it was a bit of a low-ball estimate anyhow. Actually doing these projects is harder than it seems.

See also low income housing. Some of these programs cost more than buying each of the people they help a house - but that's because they're constantly stymied by circumstance and time is money. You just can't 'poof' just buy hundreds of houses, because that would spike the price of houses. They don't exist to buy, even if they do exist. Even if the people who are funding it would let it happen (they wouldn't, lest someone get a house they didn't deserve or whatever.) So stuck on both the supply end and the money end.

Hopefully the hub caps will be an option when you order your CT,
I will not waste my money on them.

You haven't convinced me that Tesla would have sold more cars if Elon was less controversial. They wouldn't have had more cars to sell anyway. They are selling every car they can make for a profit. So, if you have friends who went with another brand, because they thought Elon Musk was too controversial, it is only their loss, not Tesla's loss. Tesla just sold that car to someone who didn't care if Elon spoke his mind.

Yes, it's sad that some people have to settle for an inferior EV because they think Elon said something unpopular, but I know a lot of people who think more highly of Elon for speaking out against the idiocy in the new woke movement and not just kowtowing to his liberal democratic base. Half of this country is conservative, and Elon has greatly expanded the market for Tesla products by not playing it safe.

If people buy inferior and over-priced EVs, that's on them, not on me and not on Elon.
