seriously though:

they are that small because that small middle 1/3rd area is all that is visible in the driver's rearview

a wiper that that cleaned the outer 1/3rds would be as good as a wiper clearing the skid plate

That's what everyone with smaller than average equipment tells themselves. And in fact most of the rest of society may even outwardly concur just so we don't have to deal with the consequences in case the person takes on Napoleon Bonaparte tendencies.
