In my opinion, the reason F-150 Lightning sales are far less than Ford expected is that it competes directly with the F-150 gas and diesel versions. Having electric drive and a large front trunk isn't enough to convince a lot of F-150 gas or diesel truck owners to switch to electric. And, it seems, that the Lightning has little appeal outside the traditional pickup market.

Tesla understood this challenge when it designed the Cybertruck. It attracts buyers outside the traditional pickup market, while, at the same time, including advanced and innovative features that divert attention from the range and towing limitations that detractors claim disqualify it as a "real" work truck.

The Cybertruck is in a class by itself. If enough people find that it fits the bill as a multi-purpose vehicle, it should continue to sell well.

I think this is spot-on. I seems like half the reviews I've read state "this is my first truck."

Absolutely nailed it. Ford went half-measure and it will definitely come back to bite them (and well deserved, too).

Sorta disagree, Ford saw an opportunity to take away some shine from Tesla and decided to thread the needle, it's kinda worked as there are people who just want an electric regular looking truck.

I hate the "novelty", not a truck comments....

I use for typical house stuff - moving stuff, Home Depot, etc
I use for loading 2-3 dirt bikes every weekend to go riding (and will put a street bike in there when needed)...
I use for truck camping (25% of camping trips)
I use for the mountain bikes to go riding once in a while
I use for light off roading once in a while and it's capable of much more
I used to pull a side by side on a trailer the other day
I could use to pull a boat but havent owned one in 10 years so nope
I use to pull my toy hauler for local camping or to get service
I will use it in winter and will, as I typically do, use it to pull someone out of a jam
I use it as a road princess to commute (no Starbucks, lol)

I just dont use it to pull the toy hauler where there aren't good charging locations (boon docking in BFE Colorado) and the distances are > 100m mi
or for a long road trips where im in a hurry (SQ7 does sustained high speed without need to stop& charge)- but I could slow down and smell the roses - just not at that point in my life yet

So it's a truck in 95% of the use cases and that's coming from someone that has had a "real truck" since 1986, including 3 diesel 2500 class trucks

Yeah article kinda has it right but not really. I wouldn’t not have bought an S, 3, X or Y. I specifically wanted a bed, but I also didn’t love any of the legacy options, so I wanted literally years with a previous car that was falling apart until CT production.

I wanted a bed for Home Depot stuff, camping, gear for off-roading, bikes, etc. I’m not towing.

Some here. When I got the email I had been looking at the model x for trips with parents with scooter.. but with the CT. I would havet to spend 5k on new mobility scooters. Also getting it now don't have to wait a few more years. Since I was 1072000.00 on the list.

I traded in my Ram 1500 for it.
People like this author do zero research and just assume everyone gets one for Instagram.
It’s a high tech REAL truck.

So true. The had a chance to make something new and they just did the some old thing. Tesla come with something that as you use it you get it. Also updated make it even better. Come on FSD.
