How Much will the Tailgate Weigh?

I think the CYBRTRK tailgate will be much heavier than any other tailgate anybody has seen before. I think most of you will agree with me.

The question is: How much will it weigh? I think with the (optional?) slide-out ramp, it will be far over 100 pounds. Possibly approaching 200 pounds. Will it take four guys to safely remove it from it's hinge?

My guess is 168 pounds, but the only reason I chose that number is I hit it on the lottery last week.
What is your guess?

I have to agree. A S.S. tailgate with built-in ramp has got to be heavier than any Tailgate known to man! During the reveal the big guy with the Quad was trying to make it look manageable, but it was obviously VERY heavy. I'm hoping this will cause Tesla to make the tailgate Electric. It makes sense, even the model Y has an Electric hatch door.
On a side note, it's always looked as though the tailgate stopped beyond level. That seems strange to me. I would want the tailgate to be able to stay level, so you have a flat workspace and many other reasons.

We saw at the unveiling a guy pull the ramp down (and put it back) and he did it alone and didn't seem to be getting a hernia over it. I suspect that the tailgate offers the support needed to get the ramp out and back in again. I'd love to see some pneumatic lift support for the tailgate but that is probably too much to ask/wish for. I suppose the bigger question is what difference does it make? Do you want a 3mm stainless tailgate or not? If not, take it off and replace it with whatever else you want, but I would prefer the 3mm stainless tailgate for myself.

Because of how aerodynamics works, at most speeds the tailgate is more fuel-efficient in the closed position.

I would expect that Tesla will put more aluminum in the gate than you'd normally expect, so it won't be super-heavy. Still, it'll be a two-person job to remove it. I doubt it'll be something you can do easily, with the required sensors probably mounted to it.

It is a truck. I never get people that wouldn’t drive a truck unless it has a damped tailgate. They are ok loading 80 Ib bags of concrete all day but need a damped tailgate. You may as well ask for an automated manicure feature too. consider the extra weight a free exercise feature. Weight reduction is a big design consideration for Tesla. I am sure they will make it as light as they can.

I wouldn’t mind it as is even if it is heavy. If they add the mid gate, the ramp can serve a dual purpose, to be extended in tailgate closed position as a part of a more solid camping contraption.

I would think they would keep it all SS for the strength and dent resistance. Those of us who have owned pickup trucks know the tailgate is usually the first component beat up by tools and whatnot.

We are also on the assumption it can be removed. Unlike other trucks, the taillights are part of the tailgate. Yes they have the extra ones on the sides for when its opened, but will those pass regulations? Unknown yet.

My thoughts is it wont be removeable, there would be no reason for it with the roll down vault cover. If you need to haul a longer load just leave the gate down.

edit: i looked up the regulation on taillights:

U.S. law requires a minimum of 7.8 square inches of illuminated surface area per brake light, 1.9 square inches of which must be visible 45 degrees off the car’s center and 15 degrees below the taillight’s horizontal centerline

right now the CT does not achieve that with the gate down. looking at this pic.

Well, at some point, the damn thing is going to have to be completely removed off of it's hinges, right? Will that mean you need four people to lift it? How many fingers do you lose if there's a mistake? Chain hoist? Forklift?

And c'mon, quit chickening out and give me your guess, in pounds.

Yea, but it's not a monolith, as your picture shows. So I expect the internal structure of the ramp, and maybe even the deck, to be aluminum.

If there is 4, 2ft by 4 ft pieces it should be about 155lbs. Or 70 kilos

Depending on where the hinge is, dosnt seem too heavy

it would be too difficult to add some springs or hydraulic or even pneumatic dampers to decrease the weight.

For most things I would/will use the truck for I want a solid and closed tailgate. Yes, I do enjoy sitting on my friend's tailgate while I cannot do the same with my lift gate so it would be nice if there is some way to lock the tailgate at 90 degrees (chains anyone, how anachronistic!) so we can sit on it before or after our sporty activity. Same for loading and unloading. But for actual transport I want it closed and opaque.
