It is going to be hard to make it affordable

I think it's funny that some short-sighted people think the Cybertruck will not be suitable for real work. I'm pretty sure there will be plenty of electricians, plumbers, carpenters, handymen, welders, ferriers, parts delivery people, solar installers, and construction companies that will put the Cybertruck to good use.

In a couple short years, those who claim it's not a work truck will look even more foolish than they do now.

I live within an easy drive of four major oil refineries. If you want to have some fun, camp out by the gates when the oil refinery workers come off shift. You will see a lot of refinery workers drive large trucks between home and the refinery, as if they need a "work truck". This is one application the Cybertruck will not excel at as a "work truck" because it could decrease job security in more ways than one.

A challenge Tesla faces is that people are trying to compare a single initial configuration CT to the entire Ford F Series. There is a huge difference between a base F150 XL single cab short bed and a F450 Platinum SuperCab dually. Never mind the F250, Raptor, etc! Yet each version has plenty of customers, and CT has reservation holders that not only hope, but ~expect~ to be able to buy THAT specific truck format in a CyberTruck right out of the gate. We look at the latest spy photos and say, "Wait!! This truck doesn't have X, Y, or Z. FAIL!!"
When the CT first goes on sale later this year, it won't match the F150XL OR the F450 Platinum. It will be some spec that lies in the middle, where Tesla feels they can check a lot of boxes and can sell a lot of trucks. Over the next ten years, Tesla will probably (slowly) fill out more of that product line. But despite all of our hopes, this will not be a magical truck that is all things to all people. Those of us that have very specific wish lists will have to be willing to compromise, wait, or buy something else.

From what we have seen so far minimalism and practicality were the top priorities. I don’t see any sign of a luxurious oriented truck interior.

The Cybertruck will be perfect for some jobs, completely unsuitable for others.

Just like every other truck

Elon keeps saying "Prototypes are easy, production is hard", this does not mean Tesla is unable to produce any vehicles.

Saying it will be "hard to make it affordable", means just that. It will be affordable, but it will take some effort to make it so.

I interpret this to highligt the awesomeness of the Tesla team and to explain the slow ramp.

We do not know the final pricing. Please stop the whining.

The head of engineering at SpaceX, who launches rockets into orbit and lands then on end to reuse them is capable of doing hard things. Who knew?

I think people mistakenly are taking him saying "it will be hard" as "we won't be able to do it". I believe this truck will be competitive with 1/2 ton trucks on the market currently.

Very well put!

If Elon didn't intend for Cybertruck to be affordable, he wouldn't have said it's hard to make it so. Elon is not a whiner and complainer; he rolls up his sleeves and makes the impossible happen. That's why he's wealthy. He wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth, he did it by turning the impossible into the possible and offering great value for his products and services.

He doesn't twist people's arms to get them to buy the products and services his company creates, he says, "We created something really good. Check it out and see if it offers a good value for you or your company."

He's wealthy because a lot of people find positive value in his company's products and services. He knows how to create value and people like him are attracted to him so he has teams he can give the necessary tools and guidance to and let them create value. People like this don't turn 52 years old and change. He's not going to suddenly get greedy or decide it's too difficult to offer great value, that's not what creates success.

I'm baffled why so many short-sighted people think he's going to change all of a sudden. Sure, you will be able to buy a fully loaded truck with four motors, huge range, the performance of a Lamborghini and incredible capability going from pavement to wilderness with auxillary solar charging solutions, camp kitchens, winches, bigger tires and wheels, and a host of other truck accessories. I bet, if you tried, you get the "all-in" price to $100K or more, but that's not where the real truck market resides, and Elon knows that.

Elon is not going to leave the plumbers and electricians, the delivery agents and construction companies, the sport fishers and hunters, the welders and pipefitters, the farmers and bobcat operators, out in the cold. He's going to provide a tough work truck at a great price. It baffles me why anyone would doubt that. It implies that Tesla's growth is over, that Tesla is happy to just be a niche supplier of luxury trucks to wealthy people. How anyone could be so blind as to believe that, when everything points to the mass market, is beyond me.
