Still, the load blocks it and that's not a requirement to be unblocked by loads.

I was unclear.... I think it was not placed in the tail gate so that the gate could be removed without having to disconnect the light.

When we had “dumb” tailgates which were little more than a big folded piece of steel that made sense. Now they make tailgates with stereo speakers and all kinds of crazy crap in them for tailgating.

Tossing a light on there would be easy.

I even saw one crazy tailgate that had a telescoping ramp come out of it. :)

I don't know why a tailgate wouldn't have a plug in it anyhow, so it would have a sensor for up/down, locked/latched, etc.

Most didn’t until well into the 00s. My Tundra’s tailgate was just a chunk of steel and plastic.

Tailgates didn’t lock until fairly recently.

The other possible reason you might want to avoid a light on the tailgate is just that the tailgate tends to get banged around and damaged a lot on work trucks. I’ve seen a lot of tailgates with big creases in them.

This is less an issue with modern LED lights which are more durable and don’t need big reflectors. Also… Cybertruck tailgate is likely to be pretty durable.

Though again, modern tailgates which have lots of functionality built into them are vulnerable to a lot of abuse.

Your arrows are pointing at reflectors.... lights are just above them.

Okay..
In reveal
Lights didn't turn on when the tailgate was in the down position.
Probably in the works.

Here is a close up that may be an updated version of the vault gate. This was from the Austin photos 6 months ago or so.

Elon looked a little perturbed when the ramp was being pulled out on stage. Probably has to slide it out straight, or it would have jammed or something.

It's the same ramp we see in this picture, and no doubt the production version will be sturdier.

Also, a lot has to do with legacy and momentum. Trucks have had taillights in the back window since the center tail tight was introduced when trucks didn‘t have locking tailgates, speakers, etc.

Until Tesla came along they had no incentive to change it.

Now of course, Tesla is here so monkey see, monkey do.

Ford and GM are relying on those people to keep them afloat. Both to buy their ICE trucks to help keep them profitable through this, and later, to buy their EVs.
