If only there were a way to have the lights be visible when the tailgate is down. This tailgate design is not going to work (one piece tailgate that covers the whole rear of the vehicle) because it does not leave enough taillight area if someone drives with the tailgate down. One reason current trucks look the way they do is you have to have a certain number of square inches of light area that is visible with the tailgate up or down and there are also some requirements about how much is visible from the side of the vehicle. The center brake light also needs to be above the other lights (something like at least eight inches) and visible with the tailgate down. They will end up with a more conventional rear light setup to get past the regulators.
That’s a pic if the original. There‘s a somewhat different design on one of the later prototypes, but basically the same idea.
