CT community, am I missing a slat or trim piece here or is this gap normal?

I think initially this was normal (especially if yours is a FS or early trim). However, many have said this is the reason why their bed has been leaking. Service Center (SC) fix seems to add an additional slat to minimize any leaking. The bed was never made to be 100% waterproof, though it should reject at least 90% ingress.
There was another user who posted in detail a fix for this - both at the top region (where you took your pic) and also at the tailgate part (where the rubber is "flimsy"). For the latter, the person bought a foam filler, shoved it into the rubber hole circled in the picture I pasted below:

This help prevent water getting in at the bottom, and the extra slat from the SC stopped water from getting in at the top. If I'm not wrong, the SC also installed a rubber seal at the top as well by replacing the original cover, shown here:

I have a Service appointment for this on April 15th as we speak. I never noticed it until I placed items in my bed only to realize they were soaking wet after 3 hours in (light to moderate) rain.

Check these out as well:

2024 FS. Same issues here. Had water leaking into the bed. They added a new slat and due to calibration problems installed new motors also.

If you have water on your back glass after wash or rain note that the slat does not keep that from happening and that is an entirely separate issue.

Thank you to all that have responded so quickly and all that you’ve shared. Love this CT community,
you all are the best, appreciate you!

I failed to include mine is an 01/2025 production (61K VIN) AWD that was a <1600 mile demo I picked up in 12/2025 as a year end closeout lease. I’m approaching 5500 miles and have loved every one of them. So will add tire rotation and wiper replacement to this service visit. TY!

Not going to read through all comments. Yes, you are missing a slat. Takes SC a while to do it and it takes two techs and their special table. Took my SC a whole day to fix mine.

FWIW, book time is only 1.2 hours.

That may be but I had a loaner for two days.
Sure, the time it takes to get it done is more than the time it takes to do it. Especially when it requires specialized equipment.
Mine was done in under 4 hours based on truck position (the day after I dropped it off, had other things done also).

Mine was a fiasco. There was a family issue with one of the two techs. So, first day, they "couldn't get to it." Second day, they told me the tech wasn't available and to come get my truck and reschedule. The next appointment, they got it done but had to keep my truck overnight. They gave me a loaner. Would have been a CT but that had such a bad weed smell they gave me a different loaner. Tech muttered about the person who had it last, "Enjoy the $200 cleaning fee and being banned from loaners." OOF.

Making 4 drives to the SC doesn't seem like a pain but it's 1 1/2 hr each way and that gets old.

agree with everyone. yes you are eligible for an extra slat. and replacing it wont help water ingress issues if you have them. the fault point is the next joint towards the front - the joint between the roof glass and the aerocover. many threads here to solve that issue. good luck!

I feel ya, ours is only 20 minutes away but driving the Explorer on three trips there sucked (didn't want to deal with a loaner and there was an issue the first time we tried to pick it up)
