Mad world. Went on a mountain bike ride today. Passed a guy on trail without incident. Guy was apparently waiting at the trailhead just so he could absolutely freak out about the cybertruck. As I pulled up he said let me tell you something. He just started yelling with pure rage about the truck. Then started into me. Losing his mind. I mean real red faced anger. This was S. Utah. He was driving a lifted f350 diesel. Not an Elon thing. Came at me with fists balled and violent intentions. Having been a public defender for decades, this type of thing is literally just another day at the office for me. Spent a lot of time with very troubled souls. I felt great pity for this person and his challenges. So much hate and anger. Tried to help him past it with all the love and understanding I could muster. I’ve got an Irish temper myself. I’ve been known to lose it from time to time. Nobody is perfect. He eventually went back to his truck still furiously screaming. It was very bizarre. I gotta say, Cybertruck or no Cybertruck, t’s wild times out there. Feels like a bloody tinderbox. The internet is making everyone insane. Glad I’m retired and don’t have to give a shit. Be kind to each other.

Edit: This was a very strange outlier event. My experience has been overwhelmingly positive.

Yeah it was snowing the other day. An old Buick was tow strapping an old Toyota pickup behind. The guy being towed had his window down screaming giving me he finger. Had to be like 10 degrees out.

Many people have problems. If they have problems with others modes of transportation they likely have bigger problems. Might need the services of a public defender sooner than later. ;)

People feel threatened, rightly or wrongly and in your case absolutely wrongly. He felt threatened by a pseudo-threat to his comprehension of the world changing around him. He lashed out because of change and because of uncertainty.

Being in a state of uncertainty brings out the worst in many people. Often they can’t even cognitively state any real reason behind their actions. Many times they make it worse by self-medicating to assuage their anxiety about their uncertainty, with alcohol, stimulants, or narcotics.

A major takeaway is that a person in this state of mind is not going to be rational. The best response is to remain calm, behave as if not threatened, and to avoid escalation and to engage as little as possible before breaking off the encounter.

You are already on the side of the better outcome because you’re driving the most-American pickup truck with incredible technology that is helping to preserve that beautiful Southern Utah environment. You won the argument before it even began that day. No amount of persuasion is changing these lunatics’ minds.

Be quick to video record in a non-aggressive manner if needed for evidentiary reasons, but work to de-escalate and disengage as quickly as possible.

Be safe out there counselor!

There are those like us who are innovator minded, then there are the laggards behind the times and can’t accept technology for what it is. And then everyone else in the middle. It’s crazy the amount of hate there is for CT, it’s just super confusing between hating it because it’s electric or is it because the brand, or because of Elon? Funny how so many people try to show their old school selves by using diesel or even trying to look hard by buying an ā€œAmerican truckā€. But Tesla is actually manufactured in America, while some of the other brands these days are just assembled in US. Additionally hearing all the recalls and issues with GMC and for trucks. So like if I wanna try something different that’s my risk not sure why everyone else is riled up about it.

The Elon hate I can understand, I'm not his biggest fan either. What I don't get is hating a vehicle you don't own or a person you've never met because he drives a vehicle headed by a guy you don't like.

If I come out of Walmart, does that mean I hate mom and pop shops? Jeepers, it's a weird world.

It is so wild out there right now. I’m not worried about myself as like other have said I will just be calm and let it go. I have had a number of life events (car accident with three people dead, family tragedies, cancer, more) that have tempered me over the years. Have had a couple people get aggressive but standing 6’3ā€ over 220 lbs normally calms them down some when I get out of the truck, not having to say a word. I am not a macho kind of dude at heart, I’d rather show love and kindness to my fellow humans. I do worry when I have my wife with me. If anyone did something to my wife I would not be able to keep it together.

Good grief this is exactly what I’m talking about. Southern Utah (all of Utah really) is one of my favorite playgrounds, and this is exactly the concern I’ve been having about taking the CB out into the wilderness!

This is the primary use for which I purchased it! ?

I certainly don’t want to be going out into all that beauty and having somebody ruin my day like this.

De-escalation is the exact right move, but what if he didn’t wait for you to vent his spleen? What if he just waited for you to leave and then trashed your truck? Slashed four of your tires and left you stranded?

In the summer? In Escalante? That could be way more than just an inconvenience!

It’s really disheartening to hear that you’re experiencing the exact thing that I was becoming concerned about; in the exact place that I want to be with my truck!

I cannot see driving my truck to Zion and leaving it unattended for hours/days while I hike around. ?

And this is the problem - the truck is an equal opportunity offender! You got this presumably conservative guy, but that doesn’t mean the next time it won’t be some liberal asshat.

The pool of people that would specifically target my FJ Cruiser for simply existing is near, but not zero. Let’s call that X. For the Cybertruck the threat is at least 2X!

I’ve never had to even think about something like this with any vehicle I’ve owned! ?

Seriously??

I mean, you do realize this IS the problem. You and many others think it is okay to hate Elon simply because they disagree with his politics and further, by whatever convoluted reasoning, hate the vehicle his company built. Not cool.

If it wasn't for Elon, there would never have been a Cybertruck.

Shooting someone in those circumstances is a little something we call murder in Utah.
Correct! Most, if not all, other states too counselor! Also, ignoring all of that I’m going to assume that you’re not a sociopath (you did pass character & fitness at some point after all) so probably taking a human life is not on your checklist for your average weekend excursion. ?

You’d have to live in a real shit-hole country to have that kind of mentality.

This is a great reply. Spot on. I just told him I was sorry if I offended him and that living with that kind of hate and anger is not a good thing. I tried to just calm him down because at the end of the day he is just a human like me who happened to be in bad place.

Remember to always follow your ABC’s!

Always be carrying
I am, but I’ve got a problem with this as a solution. So, the problem is ā€œmental health problems in the USā€ and the solution is let’s shoot ā€˜em.ā€

If that doesn’t seem like a shit-hole, I don’t know what does. And if Southern Utah is a shit-hole, then you’re not gonna survive Memphis.
