First, it's not FS vs non FS. It's different tires. Both types were available (eventually) on FS. It's always been that way ASAIK, even for ICE. Everything else being equal, ATs are rougher and offer more rolling resistance. Maybe heavier, too. Not rocket science.

Same here! I get 435 watts per mile at 80 mph highway, so about 283 miles of range. AWD with AT wheels / tires

My range spikes by almost 80 miles if I slow down below 60 mph and accelerate like a grandma (no offense to seniors, my retiree mom still drives like she’s eternally late for work)

The only way I envision 300 mile range at 80 mph is using autopilot / FSD on a smooth highway, in a straight line, with no hills
My two long road trips have been round trips from Denver to Yellowstone and then from Denver to Pecos. Lots of trips along the front range and into the mountains too. Anyway, trips to Wyoming and Texas averaged 402 Wh/mile. There was some city driving mixed in there.

My current city driving (primary driving for the last 1500 miles) has generally averaged 313 Wh/mile. With the weather getting colder it will get worse. I’m curious to see what it will be.

My odometer is at 6680 with my lifetime average at 379 Wh/mile or 324 miles of range. My lifetime Wh/mile has been steadily decreasing since the end of summer vacation driving and the return to daily commuting. No matter what, the advertised range (320) was a very conservative calculation by Tesla. I’m very happy with the situation.

FS vs non-FS has different range estimates for both tire types
Non-FS AWD 314/325
Non-FS Beast 301/320

FS AWD: 318/340
FS Beast: 301 (only shows all terrain)

My son has two plausible scenarios. Incentivize people on the fence to purchase a FS before they stop producing them, or, so they can ‘unlock’ the extra range later on for a price since the battery size is probably exactly the same as in both cases.
Sounds like a smart guess to me.

Anyone, know if they discount the $1000, for military discount on the Non-Foundation series.

Also noted, they added Sales tax on NJ purchase,,NJ doesn't charge tax on EV's
as of october 1st, 50% discount on EV tax. full sales tax starting next year.

My experience with FS AWD and AT tires is range of 300 miles at 80 mph highway and 390 miles with city-ish driving (1/2 65 mph and 1/2 30 mph). It is getting much better range than originally advertised for me.
300 miles at 80 mph? That seems like a lot more miles than I am seeing. What is your starting SoC and ending SoC?

Yes.

I enjoyed reading everyone's theories to explain this minor discrepancy, but none of them explain everything satisfactorily. We are missing something here.

Better data resulted in a re-estimation of range:
Why didn't Tesla apply it to all the same models? And it appears the range is in-line with, or better than, EPA range estimates in EPA drive cycles.

Different tires:
Where is the evidence for this? It loooks like the non-Foundation and Foundation models have the same tire options.

So they can charge a fee later for a range unlock:
I think Tesla is highly unlikely to try to monetize such a small difference in range.

Did I forget any other theories? @mongo, you haven't weighed in yet.

I'm getting around 330wh/mile with normal driving, mix of city and freeway. If I do grandpa mode, then it's close to or less than 300 depending on the traffic. Very impressed with the range for CT, not so for MYP :)

Edit: Its always hot here in FL, 95+ and AC blows all the time (Cabin Overheat protection) and I always pre-cool the cabin to 72 degrees 5 min before start. All this adds to consumption as well.

It will be a software upgrade to unlock more range, it is the same for acceleration. Have you. Noticed 0-60 in 4.1 instead of 3.8. Acceleration boost software upgrade is $2500, more range unlock probably $1k. Foundation series includes them both
FS is 4.1 too

On long road trips I start at 100%. I have gone from 100% down to 2% before. Obviously, I try not to do that but Wyoming, New Mexico, and West Texas aren't exactly small states with tons of super chargers. The main point is that I average ~400 Wh/mile. That isn't 80 mph for the entire discharge. There are a few sections of 65 mph in there along with sections of 85 mph. But the majority of the drives were around 80 mph. Worst section was going north out of Rock Springs up towards Jackson...that killed me. On the flip side, coming back home in that same stretch was a gainer. As they say, "ymmv".

A highway surface that has been polished smooth by millions of vehicles makes a big difference (positive) compared to a sharp, high grip surface. Hills at 80 mph tend to not make a big difference because you probably aren't going into regen at 80 mph, unless you have less than optimum throttle control, are in unpredictable traffic, or the grades are very steep. Simply gaining and losing altitude doesn't have a big impact if you end up at the same elevation you started at.

Of course, hills generally come with corners, which can make a more significant impact than the elevation variations themselves.

All that said, 300 miles at 80 mph isn't going to be the norm. The EPA combined efficiency drive cycles never even hit 80 mph and the average speed is closer to 34 mph.
