Today I was talking to a Tesla Mobile Technician today about the CT on display in the Charlotte showroom.

They said that it can't be driven because the heat pump was disabled by headquarters prior to being delivered. The showroom was supposed to be able to allow certain customers (reservation holders and "VIPs") drive it around the parking lot - not on roads. They also said if it were driven for more than a few minutes in its current state, the motors would fail very quickly. That being said, they claim they have ridden in it at the service center. There's no telling when the public will be allowed to sit in it, much less drive it.

I am skeptical of this dubious claim. It is far more likely that this idea was a lie to prevent joy rides.

The factory could have easily locked it Valet Mode, or some other inhibited state using software.

They’re lying to you.

They simply don’t want to deal with the “ah come on man” bunch.

Also NC is the worst display store imo. They had the height wrong and the lights off for several days.

I could see how test drives might be a concern, if it takes drivers any length of time to become accustomed to the SbW turn ratio. Valet mode has decreased acceleration and limited top speed, but even that could be potentially dangerous if someone isn't used to how lively the truck can turn.

Oh I agree with you and Greggertruck that it's a ploy. But this technician sure seemed convinced that the heat pump was disabled for this purpose. This was after we chatted for a while about the subtle differences between Model Y years.

It's just weird that HQ wouldn't do what you said by plainly limiting the driving. Do they think that Showroom/Service Center staff will be more discouraged by the fear of breaking their precious CT?

I think that he thinks he was being honest about it. This was a technician, not a sales person.

Agreed that Charlotte's showroom is terrible. It has the ambiance of FEMA shack attached to a chop shop. But the sales staff there are even worse.

They tried to deliver my MY with a dozen scratches and chips. When I identified them at delivery, they tried to downplay them and bemoaned how difficult it would be to fix them. And their sales folks flat-out lied about my car having the updated center console. When I showed the manager that it was promised it in writing, they said "what are you going to do about it?" We had already sold our old car the day before and they had us over a barrel.

Years later, my parents brought me with them to take delivery of their MY at the same place. I took ten minutes to examine the car and the sales person kept trying to rush me. The paint was much better, but the trunk was super crooked. I identified it and they said "that's within tolerance. we allow for 3 mm difference from left to right." That seems like a reasonable policy, but it was so bad that one side hit the bump stop noticeably first, and the last little bit of the trunk closing visibly pulled the hatch to the center. So I got out my calipers - yes I brought calipers - and it was 7mm difference.

The actual service technicians are swell. They eventually fixed everything on both cars (excluding the center console thing). But there's no escaping the feeling that the Charlotte sales people are deliberately fleecing customers.

Test drives are one thing, but not letting people sit in it and check out the UI and controls is another.

I haven't heard of any of them allowing folks to sit in the CT, have you?
