However, if your car is sitting in -40 weather, dead cold. and you need to go on a long drive? Map out your charging route appropriately.
If your car is sitting in -40º weather... you should move.

That's a bold statement.

There's a lot of nonsense being posted in this forum recently, and this is definitely nonsense.

Existing Teslas can absolutely lose more than 50% of their battery due to cold temperatures and snow on the roads.

I agree that it's ususally not the case, if you have the car pre-heated in a garage.

True enough. I should have written that it is extremely rare to lose 50% of range due to weather and only in exceptionally cold conditions. As I noted current generation of Teslas performed better than EV competitors on the cold weather test this year (link previously provided but again here).

graphs above appear to show that, true enough cold doesn’t drop range 50% from EPA

instead, regardless of temp, Tesla ‘real world’ STARTS at 40% below EPA, and cold can drop it another 10%

And these graphs are actual data, rather than anecdotes

If you're losing 50% in bad weather.

The weather is probably bad enough you shouldn't be going very far.

Next time we get a serious snow day, I’ll stay home, Crissa told me to.
