The parking lot at the Design Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico is really tight and I'm always a bit apprehensive parking here.

and lo and behold my fear became reality as I was backing out, a car pulled in right behind me.

My bumper contacted her car and did a number on her side door while my bumper had only a few minor scratches.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

and my insurance stated this type of accident is common and that i was at fault but they were impressed there was no damage to my truck
other than the cosmetic scars.

Absolutely love my cybertruck.

PS I never got a proximity warning as i usually do when parking in and around other cars.

So odd. I was in the SAME situation yesterday - backup in a parking lot just like this - and I got the “red screen” proximity alert while I was backIng up.

Sorry you didn’t get it here! But sounds like you handled well with the nice lady, as best under the circumstances!

This a super common type incident, no matter the vehicle . Hopefully all works out in the end.

I had such an accident when doing it with my Mustang into a Tesla. I saw the Tesla “passing” me in my mirror, but didn’t notice he had stopped. Oops indeed.

How does Tesla insurance cover such an accident? Will it increase your premiums? From my accident I had $500 damage to my bumper, the Tesla almost $3000, all paid by my insurance. And then my premium went up almost $300/six month, for already three years. That was with Farmers, now called Toggle. Is Tesla insurance (in California) more forgiving?

The trick is to switch insurance providers upon your next renewal once you have a claim like that. They made nearly $8,000 dollars of additional profit on that fender bender (not counting the interest from investing).

I had a similar incident at the car wash when I forgot how to put the CT in drive out of Neutral at the end (been 5 yrs since my first Tesla). The Lexus SUV behind me made 2 bumps pretty hard but I couldn't see any scratches to the bumpers lol. I think that Lexus was more damaged but he's technically at fault for hitting my back  .

Many many years ago I was traveling with a Dupont sales rep and he always backed into parking spaces. He also had a plaque on his company car dashboard that read something like 500,000 safe miles. I asked him why he backed into parking spots and he said it was a company policy explaining that you can see cross traffic much better facing forward. Ever since I try and back into or pull straight through parking spots to mitigate this risk.

I do it so often it annoys my family. The call me the backer...

FAKE. I've seen scientific testing prove that the bumper and rear casting fall off at the drop of a hat. /s

But seriously, it held up amazingly well! I'm glad no one was injured. I hope you watch your backup cam when backing up after this! Or, back into all spaces, so you have amazing visibility when leaving.

Technically? He was 100% at fault. I doubt he looked at all. Even if she had stopped when she saw him backing up, it would have just changed where he hit her.
Everyone failed here. Lady should have held the horn down. Maybe flooded it or at least turned away. CT didn't use any of their backup cameras apparently. I basically drive via those things when backing up, there's just no visibility outside of them. Luckily, in good weather, they're amazing.
