It's pretty easy to give a pulse to these kinds of motors to make them self-destruct or make the inverter self-destruct.

So ultimately, it's kind of a software issue.

Wow, 6-7 people already have had the same issue - from this thread
For me, something “very common” statistically speaking is at least 10% to 20% of customers hitting the problem. Some statistical gurus might say it should be more than 25% to say it’s a widespread or common issue. Let’s say this forum only represents 1% of CT owners (that’s very low btw but let’s use very conservative numbers). That means around 600 owners will have this issue in the real world. That’s pretty high IMO but let’s go with that. 600 is still only 2% of 30K vehicles delivered so far. 2% is not considered a “very common” issue. I’m not at all downplaying and saying that this issue is not bad. It’s definitely a valid issue and something Tesla should absolutely fix. Tesla also started putting upgraded motors a few months ago. I’m just saying we have to be super careful when we use terms like “very common” or “widespread issue” especially for these type of serious problems without quoting real datapoints. That’s how FUD spreads against Cybertruck. Motor failing is a very serious issue. This issue might turn into 50%+ customers having it, but that hasn’t happened yet or at least we don’t know. Many people will look up to reviewers online. If these terminologies are not backed by statistics, it’s easy to lose trust in what we are saying. Just my 2 cents!

I had the exactly same thing this morning. VIN 2100+, ~9500 mileage. The earliest service appointment available nearby is 2-3 weeks later. ☹

Wow! So many people had the same issue I had. Here is the verbatim text from the Tesla Invoice:

Concern: Customer States vehicle alert pull over safely, power reduced
Repair Notes: Technician verified customer concern. Reviewed log data and found the rear drive
inverter experienced an overcurrent condition that also caused the pyrotechnic fuses to be
blown/opened. Technician attempted to replace the rear drive inverter, however the data needed to transfer to the new inverter was unable to be retrieved from the old component which required
replacement of the drive unit assembly. Technician removed and replaced the pyro fuses, the rear
drive unit, performed a vacuum coolant refill, and test drove the vehicle. A four wheel alignment was performed since the rear subframe was removed for repairs. Verified no related alerts are present after repairs. No further repair required at this time.

Tesla Roaside and Tesla Service Center was able to tow me in and get in me in a loaner in about 90 minutes. Good thing because the truck would not drive at all and the 48V went out after 15 minutes so the tow truck driver had to use a battery to open the frunk, then remove the cover inside the frunk, then attach a 12V to the terminals to get the screen to come on to put it in tow mode.

just bring it in. - my local sc was able to bump my appt
I just brought it in and got my appt bumped and a loaner car! Staff at Santa Clara SC are the same nice, helpful and busy.
I was told that I can have it back on Friday or next Tuesday, if they can get the parts. But it is only for the disabled rear motor. Other service activities like auto generated recall requests still have to wait, since they don't have the parts.
Thanks for your advice! @denniscw

I had the same thing happen. Drove to Dublin SC a few hours after the noise and speed warning. Left the truck and got it back a few days later. They were great. Very helpful.

I never experienced the "thud," but my truck exhibited a host of errors on day three of ownership. Two weeks until the service appt. Twice the vehicle was completely unresponsive, requiring a jump via the frunk.

They replaced my rear drive unit and performed a wheel alignment.

VIN 19xxx.

Truck has been perfect since.

This is concerning to me.

We just took delivery in late July & are going on a 850 trip to Central Cali at the end of this month. Since this issue has been known for awhile now, what do you think the chances are that we’ve got the new & improved inverter in our CT?

Is this happening only to the dual motor trucks or is it affecting Beasts too? Anyone with a Beast have this happen?

Vin1050 here. Took a few hundred mile trip yesterday and the rear motor issue occurred as soon as I pulled into my destination. Had to limp back home going 65mph on interstate. Dropped off at SC this morning and a loaner was provided. Waiting on diag still.

I had my rear inverter replaced a few months ago. Same thing, driving, then loud thud, rear motor disabled. Could only drive 50 mph. I had it towed to an SC, and within a couple days they replaced just the inverter. It was the day before Tesla announced they may start to replace some motors in certain CTs.
Me too. Now they are replacing both drive units. ??‍♂
