Not sure why the rear camera feature is so trivialized ... by most accounts it is a poor implementation and was the cheapest to get the minimum functionality.
  • Isn't the rear camera used for FSD? eg monitoring cars coming up straight from behind and turn on turn signal to go around you when you are about to make a lane change?
  • Isn't it used for back up warnings? (in lieu of ultrasonic sensors that new Tesla's don't have)
  • Isn't it used for [auto or manual] parallel and backed in parking?

For sure it is all of the above. Yet I haven't had any issues making it not driveable or my FSD has worked just fine. So I am just sharing a view that for me it works fine. I also tend to spend most of my time looking ahead not behind.

My right fender cam was so oculeded this morning it was brown when signaled. It still managed a lane change. Do I like its occlusion? No. Yet if it performs the function. Should I still complain?

Do I make sure when I get in the car that my cameras are clean? Sure. I drive more than around the corner. So starting with a vehicle that is ready is a good idea. I do remember a time when car manuals suggested doing a once over your car before driving.

I think human nature is to always find the worst in things or how things should be better just for me. That subscription to me is not valid, and what is wrong with that nature.

@hauling ass. Microfiber jacket was a joke. Sorry it skipped over your head.

You can tell it's starting to rain, this is the second thread I've seen today about this.

We do have a solution coming, it's been well-tested on the 3 & Y's. None of the Rain-X type solutions work; I've tried them all, including the Glaco/Soft99 stuff - doesn't work.

I'll mention it here that any semi-permanent hydrophobic coating will eventually become contaminated, mostly with airborne particulates, and our covers are no exception, so depending on mileage and environment, expect to replace every 4-6 months, but often longer. I'm generally on once per year, but don't do a lot of miles, and not a lot of rain.
