Tesla Cybertruck Tesla’s Elon Musk highlights Cybertruck’s uniqueness, explains adoption of yoke simon-alvarez-avatar-80x80

Many things are controversial about the Tesla Cybertruck. Apart from its out-of-the-box design, the vehicle’s prototype also utilizes what could very well be the most polarizing component that Tesla has released in years: the steering yoke. Elon Musk has not announced if the Cybertruck’s production version would be released with a yoke, but based on his recent posts on Twitter, it appears that the CEO is standing firm on the idea that Tesla’s new steering system will prove itself better when vehicles become autonomous.

One thing that is truly certain about the Cybertruck is the fact that it is absolutely not like other pickup trucks on the market. Even among all-electric pickups like the Rivian R1T and the Ford F-150 Lightning, the Cybertruck is extremely different. Elon Musk noted prior to the vehicle’s unveiling that the Cybertruck would not look out of place in a cyberpunk movie set. He definitely was not kidding.

Apart from reiterating the Cybertruck’s uniqueness in the pickup truck segment, Elon Musk also explained why Tesla is adopting the use of a steering yoke on vehicles like the Model S and the Model X. When asked by a Tesla owner if there are any practical reasons for Tesla’s utilization of a steering yoke, Musk noted that round steering wheels ultimately block the screen. The CEO also added that the Full Self-Driving experience is far superior with a steering yoke.

Tesla’s steering yoke on the Model S Plaid and Long Range has been extremely controversial. The Model S Plaid has been in the market for only a few months, and during this time, it has received rave reviews from both critics and consumers alike. But even reviewers who were extremely positive about the vehicle have shared criticisms on the steering yoke, with many stating that it is more of a gimmick that does little to provide a superior steering experience.

Musk, however, seems to be set on keeping the yoke, at least on the company’s flagship cars. Whether the yoke gets used on the Cybertruck remains to be seen, but Musk should be aware that even among veteran truckers who have fallen in love with the all-electric pickup truck, many have expressed reservations about using a steering yoke on such a large vehicle. The Cybertruck, after all, is made for utility, and thus, it would likely be used by people who are accustomed to using their cars for work. Equipping the vehicle with an unfamiliar steering system could then be counterproductive.

Once there are millions of them out and about, there will be few places on the planet that the CT will look out of place.

when people go to Mars the CTs there will look downright reminiscent of home.

Is there anything new in this article? Seems like its just summing up a bunch of known stuff. If there is a new tweet or event where Musk said some of this, the lack of a link is frustrating.

Hadn't thought about it before, but Musk is tacitly suggesting that the yoke is better for F$D but nothing about people using the truck without F$D. Sort of a sideways admission that they are primarily designing for F$D and things might be less than optimum if you are not opting into the Full $elf Drive experience.

The notable thing isn't so much that you need to spend up for the best, it's that they are willing to make the base experience a little less good to improve the FSD experience.

So pony up if you want the best Tesla experience folks.

i totally agree. I love the pony reference ?
I also agree on what you stated about what’s in article. Seems more of a way to slide in an opinion while using skillful word judo.?‍♂
I’m personally looking forward to having the yoke steering. I have been practicing in our S and 3. So Kudos to the gent, who suggested practicing on our traditional steering wheel now. It’s going to be awesome to have all of that space that’s usually occupied by the larger traditional steering wheel. Way more open and I’m sure Much safer too. I do not think Cybertruck will come with a traditional steering wheel. Btw, I love the $ For the S in F$D. ? ?

The Cybertruck was demoed with the yoke. Tesla is shipping vehicles with yokes.

Unless some government regulation forces them to or there is a huge groundswell of frustration from Tesla drivers, the yoke is coming for Cybertruck.

The yolk doesn't bother me. It's the capacitive buttons and lack of stalks/horn that are troublesome.
Likewise. Having essential functions like blinkers and wipers be a moving target is not ideal.

I would say you could just use voice commands to do those things... but the button to trigger voice commands is also a capacitive button on the moving yoke.

Yup, some stuff should not move.

Tesla should make an optional stalk accessory that connects through USB port to Tesla control computer. The stalk accessory could be strapped to the steering column and provide all the standard stalks and functions (wipers, hi/low beam headlight, turn signal, etc). Tesla would not factory install the accessory but customers could buy this accessory thru the Tesla online store.

Other USB accessories Tesla should sell is

1. Driver LCD instrument Display

2. Center control button cluster for drive direction (forward/reverse), heat, air-conditioning, fan speed, audio/video control, volume, etc.

3. Aux Control switches & button panel for Cybertruck for LED light bar, fog lights, aux light, winch, train horn, etc.

4. Driver Heads UP Display

5. Two Side-view Displays - mount one one each side of dash (show view from camera)

Is being able to speak a new requirement for driving a vehicle.

voice commands as option is good but should be an option not requirement.

Same thing with all these touch controls. There should be option for buttons, knobs, dials, joysticks. Not every one has ability to easily see or touch LCD screen surfaces.

While I'm in general agreement, "options" are not really something Tesla does.

Elon seems to be designing the controls as if FSD ("Fantasy Self Driving") is already a thing. Until it is, CAN I HAVE MY FREAKING TURN SIGNALS AND HORN BACK PLZ KTHX

If voice-activation is required to drive, then I sense an ADA lawsuit.

However, if you're incapable of reading the screen, then pull over and call an Uber. Or turn on that FSD thing.

They aren't required to drive.

Just a though about how to work around the high beam toggle being a moving target. Except as I mentioned, the voice button is also a moving target.

Having the horn be harder to reach isn't a bad thing. Way too many people use them entirely too much.

Some peoples fingers don't work on touch screens... but more importantly touch screen always means you take your eyes off the road because they are not tactile neither have the same function in the same spot. Tesla is trying to make cars driver unfriendly because they want FSD to have all the fun

I want to know what about a yoke makes it better for FSD? I would understand if it folded completely out of the way like one of the VW minbus prototypes a few years ago, but if it turns like current FSD I think it would be harder than a round wheel to avoid getting hit by the wheel as it spins around trying to back out of a parking space or something.

Honestly, the yoke is one of the biggest things which makes me scratch my head about the truck. I've made peace with the handle-less door idea, but this is still a WTF thing. I just want to wait until I've actually used it for a week or two before passing judgement.

As someone mentioned. There is so much muscle memory on wipers, gear selector, and horn that it is going to take a long time for me to get used to that part. I've seen someone doing the swipe to switch from drive to reverse for a 3 point turn and it was a bit of a mess.
