Tesla Rehires Some Supercharger Workers Weeks After Musk’s Cuts

• Director of charging for North America returns to carmaker
• CEO stunned industry by cutting almost entire group last month

Tesla Inc. has begun hiring back some of the almost 500 members of its Supercharging team that Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk dismissed late last month.

Chief among the personnel who have returned is Max de Zegher, the director of charging for North America, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who asked not to be identified because the information is private. De Zegher was one of the top managers after Rebecca Tinucci, the senior director Musk fired late last month along with virtually everyone else in the charging group.

It wasn’t immediately clear how many laid-off workers have been rehired. Musk and de Zegher didn’t respond to messages seeking comment.

Tesla (TSLA) is rehiring back some of its Supercharger team which were laid off last month, according to Bloomberg. This comes after CEO Elon Musk posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the EV maker was all in on expanding its Supercharger network with an investment of over $500 million in spite of headcount reductions and recent executive departures.
ROTH Capital Senior Research Analyst Craig Irwin sits down with Catalysts to talk about Tesla's Supercharger road map and which areas the auto company should be prioritizing.
They got to show they can they can get growth going again right? When you decline 7 or 8% you've got to actually show that you can get to positive growth again. That's not particularly easy. They're going to have to cut price, they're going to have to be aggressive," Irwin states. "And they're going to have to lay out a path to the mini car, the cyber taxi, robotaxi, whatever it's going to be. Where's the growth going to come from? they've got a lot of work to do with investors."

Any video featuring the laughingstock of Tesla analysts, Craig Irwin, is not worth wasting a minute on. He's been continuously wrong on Tesla going back to somewhere around 2018 (maybe earlier, I forget).

Elon never said he didn't need a Supercharger team, obviously any company running a charging network needs employees. That's not to say that it's easier to morph what you currently have, into what you want, than it is to start from near the beginning.

If you recall, all the reports on this were just anonymous sources, we have no idea how many were retained and how many have been re-hired.

After Tinucci had cut between 15% and 20% of staffers two weeks earlier, part of much wider layoffs, they believed Musk would affirm plans for a massive charging-network expansion.

The meeting could not have gone worse. Musk, the employees said, was not pleased with Tinucci’s presentation and wanted more layoffs. When she balked, saying deeper cuts would undermine charging-business fundamentals, he responded by firing her and her entire 500-member team.

This account, the most detailed to date on the Supercharger firings and the fallout, is based on interviews with eight former charging-division employees, one contractor and a Tesla email sent to outside vendors. Only Musk and Tinucci were in the meeting described to Reuters; the four sources with knowledge of the meeting are relaying what they heard about it from Supercharger department managers.

Tesla, Musk and Tinucci did not respond to requests for comment from Reuters.

A letter sent earlier this month by a Tesla global-supply manager to Supercharger contractors and suppliers instructed them to “please hold on breaking ground on any newly awarded construction projects” and halt materials purchases, according to a copy reviewed by Reuters. “I understand that this period of change may be challenging, and that patience is not easy when expecting to be paid!”

Two former Supercharger staffers called the $500 million expansion budget a significant reduction from what the team had planned for 2024 - but nonetheless a challenge requiring hundreds of employees. In an analysis provided to Reuters, San Francisco research firm EVAdoption estimated a $500 million investment this year would translate to Tesla building 77% fewer charging ports per month in the United States compared with the automaker’s pace through April.

As recently as last month, Tesla said in a securities filing that it needed to expand charging to “ensure adequate availability” for customers, particularly after automakers including Ford (F.N), opens new tab, General Motors (GM.N), opens new tab, Toyota (7203.T), opens new tab and Hyundai (005380.KS), opens new tab announced they would start making their cars compatible with Tesla’s charging plugs, giving their vehicles Supercharger access.
Another former employee said that rollout is “completely jeopardized” because there will not be enough new charging sites coming online, and the company was only starting to implement upgrades to allow more compatibility with other manufacturers’ vehicles.
Three of the former employees called the firings a major setback to U.S. charging expansion because of the relationships Tesla employees had built with suppliers and electric utilities. Tesla had grown into one of the larger customers for many major utilities around the country, and many had hired new staff and planned new infrastructure based on Tesla’s charging-network expansion plans, the former employees said.

Not all the reports were anonymous. Some fired employees & several third party companies (partners, contractors, utilities, land owners, etc) that were working on projects have commented.

Multiple employees have confirmed their departures from the division - which had hundreds of employees - and was responsible for designing the chargers and deploying them worldwide.

William Jameson, strategic charging programs lead at Tesla, posted on X that Mr Musk had "let our entire charging org go".

Musk's initial decision to lay off the Supercharger team shocked Tesla's investors, partners, and customers. In particular, major automakers that had adopted Tesla's charging tech, such as General Motors, Ford, and Mercedes-Benz, were left hanging by Musk's move.

"There's no one remaining from the team that we worked with. In terms of formal communication from Tesla, we haven't received anything," Aaron Luque, the CEO EnviroSpark, which installs Tesla chargers, told Business Insider's Tom Carter.

Firing them because he didn’t like what he was hearing was genius! Then dangling the same job in front of them in order to get them to fall in line with the goals… he’s a true puppet master!
