Anyone know how to turn off the FSD camera for attentiveness?

i think it sucks. Would much rather hit the steering wheel every so often. It doesn’t work right and freaks out most of the time at night. Especially if wearing a hat.

I tried covering it up with tape and that worked for a little bit, switching to the steering wheel, but then it started freaking out and turned off FSD cause it said the camera was obstructed.

your only hope is to get the "attention monitoring unavailable" message by covering your eyes.

Attempting to subvert the attention monitoring algorithm will result it in being even more sensitive.

So I would advise simply figuring out what makes the system perform fewer calls, and you will find out that you can make entire trips without a single nag.

  1. Buy a laptop camera cover on Amazon.
  2. With cover off turn on FSD
  3. Slide cover over camera
  4. FSD will give a warning about a camera being unusable, but will keep working
  5. It will now use the steering wheel torque to confirm attentiveness
I have tested and confirmed this works. Before you righteous zealots get all over me how I am going to kill a bus full of disabled children doing this... this is the exact safety measure Tesla used for years and still uses if you wear a hat.

What's your general reasoning for doing this, though?

I rarely do it. Mostly when I am eating or enjoying the scenery of a back country drive. I always keep the road forward of me in my peripheral vision, but that isn't enough to keep FSD happy.
FSD doesn't seem to care if you eat and do so while looking forward

Not an option, we are moving forward, not backwards. Don’t like to be part of FSD developments and improvements, just turn FSD off and use cruise control.

No you can't turn it off. It's not going to let you hang a weight on the wheel so you can watch your cell phone for the whole drive like in the older cars.
The crazy part is the system is trying to keep you from killing yourself or others, but for some reason you seem intent on doing that. The system works really well and allows you a good bit of freedom to look in different directions before complaining, unless you're holding a cell phone in your hand in which case you've made it angry.

So just use TACC and you can do whatever you were planning on doing. If you can't do that, then the system was designed to protect us from people like you.

I have a pragmatic question for you. Which is safer?
  1. OP doing whatever dangerous behavior you think is happening with FSD on and the internal camera off, using steering wheel monitoring.
  2. OP doing whatever dangerous behavior you think is happening with FSD off.
The way I see it I would rather everyone be using FSD. For example, I cant stop people from driving drunk, but I would much rather they do it with FSD on.

im hoping for an upgrade to address this issue. My wife’s 2017 Honda minivan has a much better system for this: visual alert followed by soft dinging and system stops adjusting steering; system automatically restarts with slight pressure on steering wheel. You always feel like you are driving, even if you are not actually driving, and it’s never annoying when it mistakenly thinks you are not attentive. Eventually Tesla will find a less upsetting/disturbing/annoying/ludicrous monitoring method. But I guarantee they’ll never let you have truly full self driving. They’ll never sell this: too valuable.
