Today I learned that Wisconsin was debating a law to block towns from restricting gasoline powered vehicles and tools... but that they don't require gas stations to have air for tires.

Like, WTF?

-Crissa
ICE vehicles are going out of business even without such mandates. Battery electric tools are getting good enough that for many use cases, including commercial, they are better than ICE tools.

Restrictions on regulations against gasoline stations or other infrastructure may slow things a bit but it won’t prevent the ultimate outcome where they go out of business because they cannot bring in enough revenue. There will be a long tail of a few survivors but the vast majority are going out of business.

Always a possiblity manufacturers will move to minimal direct sales with the rest of production added to the Robotaxi fleet managed by Tesla for a commission plus license fees.

Not only will they likely go broke before catching up, but if they manage to survive, they will then be confronted with a future of shrinking demand for self owned cars.

I first heard of this around 12 yrs ago from a friend, the idea that most people won't own cars eventually, or even own a drivers license.

happening already!

“According to a data analysisperformed by the Insurance Information Institute, 43% of 16-year-olds had driver’s licenses in 1997, by 2020, that number had fallen to 25%. This trend seems to also hold true even for older members of Gen Z, only 80% of Gen Zers between the ages of 20 to 25-year-olds had licenses in 2020, whereas 90% of the same age group had their licenses in 1997.”

and those numbers will continue in that pattern as a higher percentage of our population lives in bigger cities that can support public transportation.

this is a base problem the US has had forever... our largest population centers host the smallest percentage of our land... so rules made for MOST people won't work nationwide.

Tony Seba's presentation in 2017 got me on this path, when he said Solar is nearly on par with coal, it sparked my serious interest. I then watched his 2014 vid, which was proof for me that he was heading in the right direction.

I think your friend is right. We wont care to drive, just like we dont care to understand short hand today. AI will be everywhere. Just new tech erasing the old.
