No, it doesn't obscure the window when open or closed, just when changing states. This is interesting. So according to this (Patent?) document it obstructs the center rear window view when closed. The rear window seems marginal anyway so I suppose the cameras provide the best rear view.
I suppose they could opt to make the cover long enough to obstruct the rear window while the vault is closed, as a safety feature. One of the greatest hazards in a truck collision is from untethered loads intruding into the cabin. The rear window is of dubious value when the vault is closed anyway. No, it doesn't obscure the window when open or closed, just when changing states.
It does obscure the view when closed, since the vault is opaque.

It closes flush with the top of the bed line. About even with the bottom of the window. You can see into the bed while driving (there are videos of it from the first night). This is interesting. If you can’t see what’s out the window when the vault is open, and you can’t see out the window when it’s closed (due to the vault being closed)…I suppose they could opt to make the cover long enough to obstruct the rear window while the vault is closed, as a safety feature. Maybe the rear window will also be Armor Glass, which will provide some protection for the occupants as long as they're not hauling steel balls

Why have a window at all?
In fact, that should be an option in software: "Vault open, but rear window covered". You could opt for the extra protection when hauling stuff that might cause injury, but is too large for the vault cover to close. The best window is no window.
Ah, I see.The best window is no window.
But seriously, I was implying that the vault cover could be long enough to cover both the bed and the rear window when closed. That does not mean it cannot be retracted away from the window when the vault is open.
"Vault Cam"Ah, I see.
But then how do you monitor that kid you had to put in the vault because they took out the 6th seat?
Foreign substances on the vault cover will likely fall off as the cover makes its vertical descent. This would eventually fill the space below, so this will likely be open to the outside at the bottom. If you are reasonably bright, you will not roll it up when it’s covered with large amounts of mud, snow, or leaves.
But Tesla makes vehicles for all sorts of people so they likely have a leaf solution.
I don't think the sloped bed cover design used in Cybertruck has been proven incorrect. This has been proven incorrect as often as correct, and there’s just as much data out there that in fact open beds have a slight aerodynamic advantage over a tonneau, all things being equal
....
Hopefully there is a blowout of some sort because the battery is beneath the bottom of the vault cover.Foreign substances on the vault cover will likely fall off as the cover makes its vertical descent. Typically the battery pack is between the axles, so there should be some room.Hopefully there is a blowout of some sort because the battery is beneath the bottom of the vault cover.
Or they just open the rear panel storage to access it.
