Has anyone gotten a Mexico Temporary Import Permit for the truck (or a similar-sized 3/4T or 1T truck) yet? Banjercito (if you don't know who that is stop reading ;)) has their 3.5T limit, but nobody seems to know what that actually means (a dozen different websites have different definitions). Some say that's GVWR, some say it's "the vehicle", some say "doesn't include the vehicle weight".

I know the GVWR of the CT is 9200, which is over the limit. I've heard other people with 3/4T and 1T trucks have gotten permits by having the Aduana folks put eyes on the vehicle and confirming it's a passenger vehicle and not a cargo truck. I have an appointment at the Banjercito Tuesday to try to get the TIP in hand before traveling next week, but hoping someone here has some ammunition I can use in case they try to give me crap :).

Mexico isn't that bad, we go all the time :). And where we stay is an extremely low-crime area (plus whatever Tesla we bring stays in a garage ot night).

That’s fair. I go quite a bit too, but I don’t even wear my Apple Watch Ultra when I go because I don’t want the extra attention. I’d be shocked if you drove more than 10 miles down there and didn’t get pulled over by the super trust worthy helpful police /s

Lol. There may be areas where that's the case, but we have family in Chihuahua City and drive down from either El Paso or through Ojinaga a couple times a year. Never had an issue (except for the question at hand, because every single time we go the Aduana the staff seem to be working off a different interpretation of the same laws when it comes to TIPs and FMMs).

Sigh

You are like the person that has a special rock that they think keeps tigers/lions away.
They have had the rock for years and it has never failed, never been eaten by a tiger/lion. Never even seen or heard one.

How many trips have you made (un-escorted by guards) to those locations with a very very expensive and very very very much desired vehicle?

The Simpsons - The Bear Patrol and Lisa's Tiger-Repelling Rock
Correlation is NOT causation! Lisa points out that just because no tigers have attacked Springfield for as long as a certain rock has been in the family's yard, it does not mean that the rock has actually kept the tigers away. Still, Homer is intrigued...

Many. I’ve been making this trip with new teslas for 7 years. Since before there were superchargers in the state. The first time I brought my S, it was the only one in the state. Same with my Y.

And the truck is faster, bigger, bulletproof, safer, and a longer range than both of those. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not naive, crime can happen to anyone. But if I were scared of it, I’d never drive anywhere. There are very few areas in MX where crime is as bad as the media tells you. Chihuahua is not one of them (with the exception of certain parts of Juarez, but east Dallas is a lot worse).

Sounds fun :) But I must say that many of the trucks I see in Mexico have a couple of policeman riding in the back carrying loaded submachine guns... They would love this! You might get stopped just for all the questions about it.

For temporary import you can bring any type of vehicle, the drivers license is the problem, not the truck. I don't think they match your D/L with the import documents, different agencies!

The license has nothing to do with it. As long as your name is on the registration that part is good. The problem I’m expecting is there’s a weight limit, 3.5 Tons (about 7700lbs), but nobody in the Mexican government will clarify what that actually means (vehicle weight, cargo weight, GVWR, etc…).

Here you go @Zaimor I’ve been using the info off of mexpro for years and they’ve never been wrong. Sometimes even more accurate than the govt websites lol.

This illustrates the problem precisely.

The above says "vehicle weighing less than 3.5 tons (7,716 lbs GVWR)"

but GVWR is not "weight", it is "maximum allowable weight including cargo". So, which is it??

Well he’ll have to figure that out. I was trying to help. That’s all.

Exactly. Plus, that site isn't a government site, so it doesn't help. All the government sites I've found that cite it are either "weigh less than" or mention GVWR (which as described, isn't the same).

I do appreciate the attempt at help :).

What I'm hoping (knowing it's unlikely) to find is someone who has already done this that I can reference (or could provide any documentation they referenced, if applicable). I generally despise working with the MX government, they're stereotypically a pretty corrupt bunch and just make up their own rules as they go. Which may work in my favor in this case, since most of those rules can be changed with cash lol. I know of at least one person who did this exact same and got his permit after paying an extra $300.
