Should we go for it?

  • Yes it sounds fun

  • Nope not interested

  • It could work

  • I’d give it a follow

I got the invite to order the Foundation last night.

It was going to be a bit of a stretch for me to buy the long range model at $70k (including the $10k in incentives), but I could pull it off.

As most of you know by now, this foundation series effectively adds $30k to the same model, includes about $20k in upgrades and I get to jump the line with a delivery as soon as this month, but I don’t think I can (responsible) swing it. Buuuut they are only making a 1000!!! and I really want this truck.

So here’s my thought… maybe I can monetize tiktok, instagram and youtube to cover the extra foundation payment or something through each sites ad share revenue? I already got the YouTube, TikTok and Instagram for “CyberCampers”, but was really just thinking of it as fun little personal hobby blog. Who here would like to see an ongoing blog with Cybertruck mods, accessories testing and camping trips? Something more a kin to vanlife social media channels mixed with something more educational / informative like Out of Spec Review (I know shooting really high ?).

I think it would be cool to see the + and - of trying to roadtrip in an EV instead of an ICE vehicle, but long term and in far out remote camping locations in Northern and Central America. We have friends that are out rolling around state parks in modified utility vans and shorty school busses we could visit with and compare. I have a Space Camper reservation as well. Could be interesting to try out the Tesla branded tent first and then upgrade to Space Camper whenever they launch. I had the idea back when I was finding creative ways to get the most camping supplies in and the most out of using our Model 3 for camping and multi-day road trips, but we were way too busy remodeling our house to find the downtime to put anything worth watching online. I am also hoping to start the remodel on our front and back yards and the garage, so I would be using the truck to haul materials and could test the power output with all my tools. Plus I have a solar system we recently installed, but currently no battery backup, so I could document the home battery tech and performance too.

I know. I know could be a very cringey venture that doesn’t yield a huge return. But I’m a pretty resourceful guy, I’m not a jerk, my wife is the best and again I really want this truck haha. Plus you folks could probably boost me above the monetization line, so that would clear the first hurdle and then I report back here with you all as like an ultimate hive mind / sounding board for new ideas on what to do with the truck.

My background is that I am an artist / builder and I design smart home systems for a living. My wife is a singer musician and a childcare provider. So together we might just have the chops to pull this off. I would probably have to tap my production and editing buddies to figure out how to best document and present something more compelling and polished than just posting the goofy tiktok videos that the app auto populates, but I was a video productions geek in my youth. Maybe this could work.

What are all your thoughts?

I obviously don’t have a problem over sharing. But do I really want to say “smash the like button and subscribe” for the foreseeable future? I mean if it pays for my electric camper probably.

Edit: I also know the other option is to just flip it with an exotic car broker and just wait for the next opportunity to buy one. Which is totally an option even with the no resale clause. But I don’t feel great about that idea. Not trying to knock anyone’s hustle. I get that it’s a big privilege to even be in a position to consider passing on what could be a huge financial windfall. It’s just not how I would like to get this truck.

Here are a couple pics from our recent adventures.

The amount of work to get the social media off the ground might be worse than just doing turo or Uber or something.

If you turod out the foundation you could charge hundreds/day until production ramps.

You'd only need to rent it out a few days a month.

And if it gets beat up, at the year mark you sell it. For a lot still

Plus in the meantime you can do the social media stuff as a hobby and not a job. (Still monetized)

Although, if all the Foundation are in one part of the country you might not be the only person doing that.

You could always rent it to a YouTube for 6 months for like 20k lol

Wow a bunch of great ideas honestly. Hadn’t thought of Turo. I should look into that. That could probably cover the payment difference on the foundation series alone

If not more.

That's what I'd do if I was in that spot.

But idk if I could even get a 100k+ loan for a vehicle lol.

I never tried

I’d be interested in watching some videos about camping in the Cybertruck. I really want to camp in the bed but there is a failure of no Midgate, no roll down rear window, and lastly no porting of a/c or heat to the vault. So now I’m thinking about getting a small ac/heater unit to plug in and then have some kind of mesh screen to put into a small opening of the bed cover (bed cover not closed all the way).

i know right?! Not sure on that big of a loan especially for a car. But I own my house and have good credit (finally). Plus I would trade in or sell one of the Model 3s we already own to put towards the purchase. Thanks again for the Turo idea. Definitely looking into that

I have thought about this too. Really a bummer they just didn’t make that back window open. Was thinking you could retro fit it with an old school sliding window like on most pickups. Or there are a lot of cutouts around the mid gate frame that you could find a place to put a port and a fan to pull air into the bed. Making either of those options not a possible in cab noise issue Would take some work. As for a non-retrofit option for staying warm, modern electric blankets are really efficient and cheap.

Exactly. Got to think outside the box if you want to make anything happen for yourself. I use to live in a car as a kid. Now I have a house and 2 Teslas. Life is hard but life is good
