DETROIT – General Motors Co. (NYSE: GM) announced today a collaboration with Tesla to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector design into its EVs beginning in 2025. Additionally, the collaboration will expand access to charging for GM EV drivers at 12,000 Tesla Superchargers, and growing, throughout North America. This agreement complements GM’s ongoing investments in charging, reinforcing the company’s focus on expanding charging access across home, workplace, and public spaces and builds on the more than 134,000 chargers available to GM EV drivers today through the company’s Ultium Charge 360 initiative and mobile apps.

“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points, while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. “This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers. Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard.”

The Tesla Supercharger Network will be open to GM EV drivers starting in 2024 and will initially require the use of an adapter. Beginning in 2025, the first GM EVs will be built with a NACS inlet for direct access to Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. In the future, GM will make adapters available for drivers of NACS-enabled vehicles to allow charging on CCS-capable fast charge stations.

GM will also integrate the Tesla Supercharger Network into its vehicle and mobile apps, helping drivers quickly and easily locate, pay for, and initiate charging at available Tesla Superchargers. This will complement the charging experience at the growing Ultium Charge 360 Network of charging stations, as well as additional charging stations GM makes available through existing integrations with other charging networks.

Rebecca Tinucci, Tesla’s Senior Director of Charging Infrastructure, added, “Our mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. Giving every EV owner access to ubiquitous and reliable charging is a cornerstone of that mission. We’re excited to work with other industry leaders like General Motors to provide access to the Tesla Supercharger Network via the North American Charging Standard.”

GM continues to work with others in the industry to accelerate the installation of home, work and public charging as part of its Ultium Charge 360 initiative. This includes collaborations with Pilot Company and EVgo that will add more than 5,000 DC fast chargers to the nearly 13,000 existing DC fast chargers in North America, as well as the deployment of community chargers throughout the U.S. and Canada. These initiatives, combined with this new collaboration with Tesla, will offer GM customers access to one of the largest integrated networks of high-power charging stations in North America.

Stellantis will be next large domino to fall.

With only ten years of automotive manufacturing experience Tesla had a huge influence over legacy auto makers with a superior charging connector.

This will give other charging networks incentive to build "some" chargers with NACS connectors also.

And, with giving Ford and GM access to Tesla prices for charging. It could make the other charging networks play nice on pricing.

Spectacular news. But, doesn't this mean GM and Ford no longer have any incentive to build out their own charge networks? They can just rely on Tesla for that from here on out.

I suppose that's ok as long as Tesla builds enough new chargers to keep up with total EV sales in NA. To do that affordably, Tesla will need major investment from the Feds, or the OEM's, and/or they'll need to charge a higher rate to non-tesla customers. Wish we knew all the details of how this is all going to shake out.

Tesla must have very high conviction that they can continue to build out the supercharger network extremely fast. If they can pull it off, they're going to have a huge monopoly on our nation's energy infrastructure. Especially when all those superchargers are powered by megapacks and tesla solar arrays. Master Plan Part 3 might actually come true!

One more thought: One might think VW and Toyota are next. But I wonder if at some point Tesla chooses to stop bringing on new brands. That would be the nail in the coffin for those brands. Which gives Tesla huge leverage to broker any deals. In effect, this gives Tesla *control* over the competition. This is crazy stuff to think about.

This is a very big deal for Tesla. Imagine one manufacturer having the lions share of all the equivalent of "gas stations". Don't underestimate the significance for Tesla. To be the main player in the recharging business of all EVs is a mega big deal in the years ahead.

difference between (A) Tesla giving access to Tesla-branded super chargers, and (B) other vehicles using NACS connectors

the NACS patents are open.

Wow. So Ford and GM are only 1-2 years behind on the charging plug. Idiots. CCS is dead as of today. They just don't know it.

Next Tesla will surprise everyone with vehicle to grid standards. All the expensive hardware that Ford just sold is practically useless. The big 3 are f$#ked. Tesla is just toying with them now.

You're right, and any new chargers built by other brands will now benefit Tesla. But do we really see any other entity building anywhere near as many chargers as Tesla? Why would they, when Tesla is now basically forced to massively expand their own network.

Tesla still ends up with a massive monopoly, except it won't be a true monopoly because there's nothing stopping the other brands from building their own networks. They just will choose not to. maybe.

And just imagine the virtual power network Tesla could have with all those vehicles. Instead of EVs being a problem for the grid, they could be adding to the grid.

I might be over thinking this a little. Just trying to look ahead to when Ford and GM are pumping out more EVs than they are now. Tesla chargers will become overrun with EV's if they don't expand at the same pace that EV's are produced. They now have to keep up with the production of 3 companies, instead of one. Ford and GM know this, so they might as well sit back and let Tesla build their charge network for them.

I don't mean to overstate the implications. This only applies to charging on road trips, since most EV charging should happen at home. But it's still a lot of control for Tesla to have, and a lot of profit potential and leverage over the other companies.

I suspect Tesla controls this somewhat through pricing.

afterall, there’s been no mention yet of pricing terms for supercharger access

separately, NACS chargers adopted by GM and Ford now mean the terms of the Biden package requiring CCS for charging expansion are … in an awkward position

feels like there’s a play here for both Ford/GM to get access to super chargers, and Tesla to pressure feds for access to fed funds for non-CCS chargers locations
