Cybertruck tested in Qatar’s sand dunes and performed like a beast

As members of Tesla Owners Qatar, we’ve been putting the Cybertruck to the test over the past few days in Qatar’s sand dunes, and it’s been an incredible experience. The model we tested performed like a true beast, gliding through the dunes effortlessly—like a hot knife through butter.

In the coming days, we’ll conduct further tests, providing detailed stats on tire pressure, air suspension, battery consumption, and more. For these tests, I’ll be using my own Cybertruck in satin white with All-Wheel Drive. Stay tuned for more updates!

Were you running in off-road mode or driving as normal? And did you reduce the tire pressure?

Off-road mode, tires were reduced to 20

the stock ATs actually do really well on the sand.

I ran at 20 PSI as well. I also tried higher, 25 did fine, 30 did well but I preferred the feel on the lower pressures

Sure, the parts where you're just toddling along on nearly level surfaces.

It's not the tires that make it work. The sand is an endlessly loose surface, so the biggest part is not digging in.

If you're trying to tear around, though, you want that digging so you can stop.

I grew up on a sand spit.

Oh. I thought the CT tires were special that it could do this and still be quite on the streets. I thought it needed those tires that goes womp womp womp womp on the freeway. Guess any tires are fine.

Well, the tires it has are quieter, but everything is relative!

Tires are always trade offs - what makes them good at ice makes them bad at rain. What makes them good on snow makes them not as good on ice. What makes them fast on the beach makes them squirrelly going over dunes. And what makes them good in mud and those dunes makes it noisy on the highway, like you said. What works in snow doesn't work in sand!

There's always trade offs.

but I want a tire that is load range E, corners like a summer performance tire, 130mph speed rated, works in snow/ice/sand/mud/rock/water/martian soil, increases my efficiency 50%, comes in 28" Rim Size, is 20ply, lasts 100k miles and has bad ass sidewalls! Jeesh, too much to ask?

Yeppers - Tires are a compromise - unfortunately!

I'm just gonna stick to the road. I wanted to go to Pismo Beach but I don't want to end up on social media with a stuck Cybertruck.

It's pretty simple: Follow the other tire tracks, don't go into the soft stuff, don't go where there's puddles or lots of deep divots from people, don't go over ledges.

Having AT tires helps (but is not infallible) to do slopes and dunes; if you do need to cross open loose sand, that's when you air down. Always be super easy on the accelerator - if you break through, you'll dig in and get stuck. That's what the recovery boards are for, but literally any boards or sticks may do - but stand back, they can get launched when the vehicle moves.
