You think that Tesla was lying with their 69420 target price when Rivian already had priced theirs above that and Ford hadn't announced anything?

-Crissa
Elon already said, "The specs and pricing will be different" last year.

Adding to his statement about difficult to make the cost affordable and questioning demand/ saying it will be small in the grand scheme of things is all vagueness that adds to speculation.

Not lying, just overly optimistic like FSD timelines, Plaid +, Roadster/CT timelines, Pricing on the Model S, etc.

I can see that the IRS published a list of all EVs that will be eligible for tax credits including 2024 models from GM, Chevy (Silverado), Ford, MY, M3, but no CT.

It's not definite, but a logical conclusion.

I've long said that a 4 motor "Plaid" version as Elon referred to it would be closer to the S/X pricing because they can and it helps them work on delivery ramp until they unleash a lower cost model.

for a 500 mile Quad motor truck with all the options before FSD, whatever a plaid model X costs at the same time, plus 10%

I don’t expect initial release will be in my price range. I will only cancel if Tesla put me on the spot and say order the high trim or lose your deposit. Or if they announce the lowest trim price/specs and it is 240 miles $70K. Or if fast ccs charging becomes magically reliable and wide spread within the next two years.

While +40% would be 'different' it would also be 'different' than all the other cars they produce, none of which are 40% more than their prices in 2019, let alone their last quarter 2021 prices (when the Cybertruck was supposed to come out).

I can see that the IRS published a list of all EVs that will be eligible for tax credits including 2024 models from GM, Chevy (Silverado), Ford, MY, M3, but no CT.
The Silverado may be on the list but they don't have a street date yet, either. The list is just that the company filed the papers - not that there aren't other vehicles that qualify. There are cars that qualify that aren't on the list because they didn't file their paperwork in time (VW, for instance.)

Those weren't real prices. You are comparing them to real, actual prices. They were promotional and it even stated in the contract that they were subject to change.

Plus the 4 motor, Plaid, with rear-wheel steering wasn't even offered.

I'm willing to make a wager that the starting price is over $80k.

And to your tax answer, I don't know enough to dispute that. Volkswagon is on the list as it was updated the next day. Here is the list:

The IRS says the following vehicles are still eligible for both tax credits, worth $7,500:

  • Cadillac Lyriq
  • Chevy Bolt
  • Chevy Bolt EUV
  • Chevy Silverado EV
  • Chrysler Pacifica PHEV
  • Ford F-150 Lightning
  • Lincoln Aviator Grand Touring plug-in hybrid
  • Tesla Model Y (AWD, Long Range AWD and Performance)
  • Tesla Model 3 (Performance)
  • Volkswagen ID.4 (Standard, S, Pro, Pro S, Pro S Plus, as well as AWD Pro, AWD Pro S and AWD Pro S Plus)
The upcoming Chevy Blazer and Chevy Equinox EVs will also be eligible for both credits.

These vehicles are now eligible for a single tax credit, worth $3,750:

  • Ford E-Transit
  • Ford Escape plug-in hybrid
  • Jeep Wrangler 4xe
  • Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
  • Lincoln Corsair Grand Touring plug-in hybrid
  • Mustang Mach-E
  • Tesla Model 3 (Standard Range RWD)

I totally understand your position, which is kinda unique. Having just recently purchased a Lightning and being happy with that purchase. Well done, you have your bases covered.
If Tesla notifies you that your Cybertruck is available at (what you consider a reasonable price). You can trade in your Lightning at probably more than you paid for it, and get your dream vehicle.
However, if Tesla somehow offers you a deal (that you consider Unreasonable). You have a vehicle that you are glad you purchased when you did.
WELL DONE!

Trading in vehicles to make money is terrible advice in this economy.

That was pandemic level stuff.

I got it for $20K less than it is worth.

Edit: $27.5K (including tax credit at the end of the year).

This post definitely strikes a nerve with me. My pockets are not that deep, and I have already lost a great deal of value on my Model 3 due to the recent pricing games.

We should revisit this when actual pricing and deliveries start. At that time, we may need to start a thread on "Now that you can't afford the CT, what will you buy?".

and the fact that Tesla didn't submit the CT to the IRS to qualify for tax breaks this year or next year
I can see that the IRS published a list of all EVs that will be eligible for tax credits including 2024 models from GM, Chevy (Silverado), Ford, MY, M3, but no CT.
I wouldn’t deduce anything from the CT not being listed.

To be listed, the manu has to provide the IRS the base retail price suggested by the manufacturer, plus the retail price suggested by the manufacturer for each accessory or item of optional equipment that will be physically attached to the vehicle at the time of delivery to the dealer.

Even if Tesla has this information internally at this point, they won’t be making it public via the IRS prior to the CT official release.

And they don’t have to until the vehicle is being sold

From what I read they only have to provide the sales price (what I read could be wrong) as it's stated that non-software accessories will add to the total and can take it over that threshold, but the fact there's cars on there not coming out until next year seems relevant.

Maybe it's nothing, but from everything else, I think it's a safe bet that the top trim, launch pricing will likely be at or over the 80k threshold.

Do you think that's not a logical leap? All we can do is make leaps and speculate at this point.

I sure did
That's what created this discussion. Elon's statement of difficulties making it affordable, his questioning on demand, and that he said it will be relatively small in the grand scheme of things for Tesla, which is a massive departure from his previous statements.
