First post here, long time lurker.
This has GOT to stop! ?

People who know what they're talking about need to quit sitting in the shadows, rolling their eyes at us ignoramuses who are stepping well outside of our area of knowledge to form uneducated guesses about CyberTruck.

A recent Cybertruck display had zero reference to SS thickness. Mmmmmmm…

15070400-2A99-4F2C-8A5C-EA34F0213772.webp

It's door panels. Those the the 300 series stainless. The whole body is not. This has been said publicly already.
....

Where was it publicly stated that outer body (excluding underbody) was something other than 3mm cold-rolled 30x stainless steel and armor glass?

End of discussion?
If it has been said by Tesla publicly then please provide a link and I will shut up because I have not seen or heard of Tesla making such a statement (nor do I expect it to). If anyone else says it it means nothing.

Let's face it... "Things that were said" four years ago are as likely as not, moot. A LOT has changed since that time, so unless you have authoritative, on the record, comments from folks from Tesla, we shouldn't dig in our heels to assert them.

The 30X cold rolled 3mm stainless steel exoskeleton "promise" is no longer gospel. The only thing in that description I'd be willing to bet 1% of my $TSLA holdings on is the stainless steel part. The rest can, and should, be adjusted if the reasoning for it initially has changed. If the chief rigidity of the body has been switched to the body in black as opposed to the outer skin, the need for heavy 3mm 30X would be more of a detriment than a benefit. It would be a shame if Tesla sticks with needlessly heavy and costly components just so Elon/Franz can avoid the appearance of lying.

I was willing to accept that non-ferromagnetic autinitic 30X steel would be used because I thought it was essential for the structural strength. If it isn't... I would prefer martensitic stainless steel so that I can adhere magnetic signs, or hooks, or lights to the sides, hood, tailgate of my truck. My magnetic numbers that I use for auto-cross only stick to the rear quarter panels of my Model 3, and nowhere at all on my Model S. It's kind of humiliating* using painter's tape on a $100k car when I have nice magnetic #s and logos in the frunk. ?

When working on/around your vehicle at night it's nice to be able to slap a magnetic flood light wherever you need it to illuminate the area you're working in. The limitations I've had to deal with these aluminum cars has made me long for the days of good old American steel.

3mm is 0.118", not 0.125" it's right between 11 and 12 gauge steel. 11 gauge is 0.125".

In that video, Elon multiple times says Cybertruck will be bullet-proof to handgun and even asks Jay doesn't he want a truck that is bullet-proof to handgun.

He explicitly says the doors are the steel in question. I guess you could argue "but he didn't say the other panels weren't" but... Wouldn't he just say "the whole truck is bullet proof to a handgun".

I see. So you’re interpretation of the Jay Leno discussion is that it clarifies/modifies that while the whole truck will be made of CR 30X SS, only the door panels will be 3mm?

CT reveal:

“So we’re able to make the skin out of thick, ultra hard stainless steel. It’s really hard. We’re going to show you just how hard….
It is literally bulletproof to a 9mm handgun. That’s how strong the skin is. So it’s ultra hard, cold rolled stainless steel alloy that we’ve developed. We’re going to be using the same alloy in the Starship rocket and in the Cybertruck.”

From CT website: “Starting with a nearly impenetrable exoskeleton, every component is designed for superior strength and endurance, from Ultra-Hard 30X Cold-Rolled stainless-steel structural skin

None of the above specifying the 3mm thickness

I rewatched the reveal, and he does sort of mince words about it. In one part saying “the skin” is bulletproof, no qualifier of door; in another part, he explicitly refer NFTs that ‘doors’ of other trucks aren’t this hard.

In fact, I can’t find where in the reveal it ever mentions 3mm? Stories from the time report it, but I’m not seeing it.

Boy, if there’s a body in black and only the doors are 3mm, it’ll be bedlam!

304 SS, which appears to be the base of 30X, is mildly magnetic. It is questionable whether either Elon or Franz care about people considering them liars. On the other hand, from the beginning their claim of using SS was to eliminate paint and to make the car extremely rugged. That is pure practicality. I do not claim to know what the outcome will be but I am hoping that Tesla sticks with 3 mm SS throughout.

Ok, he says the doors, but he doesn’t say ‘not’ the rest of it. By your reasoning, the rest of the Cybertruck could be made of anything ‘but’ 3 mm SS. And yet, we know from every prototype that the entire skin is SS. So what’s it gonna be? That said, I will shut up about it as promised.

Doesn't he literally say "The door panels of the car are... "? He doesn't say the whole body is cold rolled steel. I don't think this link shows that they are using the same stainless steel all over the vehicle.

Which is the point of me sharing this, he specifies the doors.

I am of the understanding it's only doors that are thick(er) stainless. Not the whole truck.
