It would be cheaper for Tesla to install 4WS on all trucks, but disable it in software on the lower trims (available with an upcharge of course).

To recover engineering costs and benefit from economies-of-scale... you need scale. Big scale.

If a 90s prelude can do it I'm sure we don't need 4 motors lol

I do not think that 4 wheel steering is a cheap add. I think it will be exclusive on Tri-motor. Tesla could configure the Tri motor with it and the dual motor without. That way they can justify the Tri-motor cost. Not everyone will need the tight turning radius.

And I’m fairly certain it will cost MORE to split the assembly line based on steering. There has been ZERO indication that any feature is limited to a specific drivetrain. But we HAVE seen duals with 4WS. So how do you justify a split at this point?

You and I have different definitions of "cheap".

The Honda Prelude offered 4WS as a $1300 option. GM had "Quadrasteer" for around $1000.

In my humble opinion, if Tesla can crush the competition on price, the Cybertruck will be a huge win for Tesla and the customer. The Cybertruck has a lot of unique features and quality materials. I believe Elon wants to show the world that through innovation in manufacturing, Tesla can deliver a higher quality vehicle. I think there can be two versions of the Cybertruck with and without the 4 wheel steering particularly if it is just one battery option.

I think your opinion of Elon is correct. However, because I believe he wants to make the CT a new leap forward in tech on vehicles, there is NO reason to build a CT without 4WS. And again, how much floor space, and engineering, and people, and money will it cost to split the CT into two different lines? And what would it require not in gross sales, but in additional sales (over and above the number they would sell with only 4WS available) to make this MORE profitable than just 4WS alone???

Like I’ve said before, I don’t see this concept fitting in with their demonstrated build philosophy, or sales philosophy, or design philosophy, or basically anything they have ever demonstrated in the past.

According to Bluechip506 that is exactly how it will be done. I hear he really knows his stuff too. All of his predictions have turned out to be true, unless they weren't.

Don't we have something more fun to speculate?

I think they will include it on all CTs. Since AWS truly improves the turning radius of the vehicle and IMHO should be considered a safety feature, Tesla will want to make it standard. It would help to differentiate ALL CTs over the competition. Unless it is super expensive, it doesn't make much sense to have it be an option (and we've seen Tesla try to reduce the configuration options as much as possible in other models).

Sure, we have some other discussion topics to pick from:
- CT Pricing Predictions
- Passthrough/Midgate
- Size of the CT
- To BAW or not BAW? That is the question

Which of these worthy topics should we dig up? :)

I was wondering if the CT is a exoskeleton? Can anyone elaborate on that please.
