According to this article https://www.teslarati.com/massive-batches-tesla-cybertruck-castings-giga-texas/ there were over a hundred castings on Friday that are gone and almost 100 appeared.

I'm guessing they put the castings outside to cool and then bring them in to build. Seems unoptimized.

But it sounds like they could be making a couple dozen a day.
They do this with the Model Y castings, as well. They have racks inside but the ones outside are like... Extra queue.

Before they started using the castings in the Model Y they literally ringed the factory in Fremont with them.

it seems unoptimized because it's not what’s up

castings are outside when they’re defective/scrap

in fact many of these you can zoom in on and either see them labeled as scrap, or missing chunks - and the rest likely are just oriented the wrong direction to see the marks or have some other obvious tell not req the marks

All of these are oriented to make the marks visible

Do you have any idea if these scrap castings can be repurposed for new raw material, or are they essentially one-and-done for production purposes?

I don’t know but assume they can all be smelted for recycling

i also don’t know but would assume until I‘M told otherwise that the recycled material can’t be reused for castings (impurity issues?) but likely for non-structural (or less structurally sensitive?) stuff

They need to be reprocessed before they can be cast again, because some of the elements would have migrated in the mix.

Tesla has a plan for recycling on site, but has not yet built it, so they're sent to a recycler as scrap.

@cvalue13 and @Crissa

that's what I was guessing...only smelter factory fresh materials can be used for production.

would be cool to have one of these rejects as an art install.

Who's scrap heap are they going to?

Maybe Monroe should go and put his rubber boots on and go digging there.

It depends on what you mean by unoptimized. Long-term? Absolutely. Short term, Tesla has a history of doing stuff like this with the principle that if we can make them, we might as well, even if we're carting them around or storing them outside. It's better than having workers or equipment sitting idle while the rest of the assembly process catches up.

With regard to these castings, I would agree with cvalue that the ones in his pic are scrap. However, as Crissa stated Tesla basically lined their CA factory with Y castings waiting for use a while back, and I've seen other pics of the CT castings from the last few days that do not look like scrap.

Yeah, the ones they lay out into a big flat area they're probably doing inspections on. We can't tell if they're scrap from that; since they might pass the inspections.

Since all of them don't end up in the scrap pile, I assume some must have passed.

I imagine all the scrap rejects will be cleared out and gone by the time the 30th rolls around. Of course Elon might be giving away swag bags and we all get a piece of it to take home.
What’s the policy on carry on bags?

HAHAHAHA. Ok, I know this one! It has to fit in the overhead bin which is generally 24"x16"x10" and can't violate the TSA restrictions on weapons. So a piece of the CT that fits in that, certainly would be ok.

Of course, if he gave away something bigger, there is always FedEx or UPS. And if he gave away an entire casting, Then you strap it to a pallet and call a freight company.
