Range extender is probably just a $20k battery upgrade and ugly road tires.

I think that is less likely due to weight distribution... If I were designing it I would either make it a brick that into the front of the bed that makes the bed a little shorter OR make it relatively thin and flat and same dimensions as the bed, so when you put it on the bottom it just makes bed shallower
Making it like a brick makes a lot of sense. You could keep the weight in front of the rear tires.

Decent thought. Alignment, dust / dirt rejection, and a few other considerations could be real headaches. But I'll call this plausible too.

Hopefully noone does like that Nio (?) in China and drop the pack on the road.........

Right, I wasn't imagining fully automated or robotic connection. A manual electrical and physical connection is going to need some serious engineering ("idiot proofing").

The 340 mile range is pretty much what I expected. I might be able to make it work but that price...

I am skeptical about the "toughness". I will believe it after Whistlin Diesel has tested it.

Let's see how it compares to this: Hilux Durability Test

Perhaps the underbed storage compartment?

Hmmm I spoke with a Tesla engineer and he said only tri-motor batteries were ready. Which means the range is software locked most likely. Given the hype they could make the first series of trucks easier to manufacture on a single line. That’s also why the pricing is more expensive. People who really want this truck is willing to pay for it now and have the longer range option.

if this is true then there will be a cheaper dual motor with a standard range pack probably around 300 miles made on line 2. This would not have a range extender option.

what do you guys think?

Womp womp. Less available towing capacity and less available payload with the extender taking up valuable cubics. I guess the woods dwellers will appreciate it. Long haulers would definitely need a trailer. Sigh.
