I drive a lot. Like my 2018 Model 3 has 102,000 miles. So i'm screwed with retaining value haha. But I do have another Cybertruck reservation around 280,000. So my original thought was get one early, and when my second reservation comes along decide If they made any changes/improvements, sell and get the new one. Doubt I'll make much back due to how much I drive and the Foundation premium.

But I'll at least enjoy the truck a LOT since I'm in it so much.
that’s less than 20k miles per year. That should not be a big hit on the resale price during the aforementioned “peak” period.

So hear might be a funny story (or not):

Like many on this forum I was super pumped and perhaps a very fast clicker as Elon announced, "reservations are now live" back in 2019, I certainly had a few browsers/windows/incognitoTabs/VPNs/etc all going and clicking...

After the night was over and the next day I had two reservations that rolled in. I actually contacted support in the weeks to follow to ask which reservation to keep and which to cancel as I wanted the earlier one obviously, but as you would expect they were not the most helpful.

So alas fast forward 4 years and I've ended up keeping both reservations even though I thought many times over the years, "I should really cancel the later reservation number and get my $100 back for it". lol, well it turns out that one was the first to hit (this evening):

Both were tri-motor, I checked the FSD option, and I live in Nebraska.
  • res: RN1127508## the email arrived on Nov 22, 2019, 1:31 AM Central Standard Time (able to configure tonight)
  • res: RN1127478## the email arrived on Nov 22, 2019, 2:54 AM Central Standard Time (nothing yet)
After noticing the twitter posts and the posts on this forum mentioning to check my account despite not seeing an email, I did... and low and behold there it was. And interestingly enough the later reservation number (which arrived earlier in the day/night i.e. RN1127508##) is the one that I was able to configure.

More than once this past week as I've watched the posts on X and this forum roll in, I've thought to myself what would I do if I happened to get the opportunity for this foundation series...

I was pretty convinced I'd wait until regular orders opened up "because I don't need all that extra stuff with the Foundation series" and "I can clearly wait until the regular trucks roll out and claim the $7500 tax credit"... well thanks to all of you, this forum, and this thread in particular, I'm now 1 step closer to a CT!

Super pumped but also now really need to focus up and return to that "ramen noodle diet" I had in college to save some cash to pay for this damn thing! lol

I had the same situation with pre-ordering. The site was slow and my order was not going through. So kept trying and ended up ordering 8 CT. Next day, i saw 8 emails and a week later cancelled all but one. I am around RN11275xxxx. Still waiting for an invite. I am not exactly sure if they are indeed going by the reservation queue or not. May be they are and i am just a bit impatient and have the fomo effect building up. I don’t want to pay extra 20k. But if I get the invite, I am pretty sure I will go ahead and submit.

You and me both. I think invitations are gonna keep going out until they get 1000 people to actually order a truck. They’re putting a $20K premium on these trucks that are already priced pretty high, with accessories that cost them way less to manufacture than what they sell them for. The profit margin on the extra 20K has got to be great. We all know that not everyone who receives an invite will buy a truck so it’s in Tesla’s best interest to keep sending them out until they get a 1000 confirmations before production of anything else begins. With that being said, if I got an invite, I’d configure my truck like everyone else. I see the 20K premium as forcing me to get some of the accessories I probably wouldn’t get when the time comes plus actually having a time line. Those of us who haven’t gotten the invite are still in limbo about what comes next. Depending on how long it takes them to build the Foundation series trucks, it could push production of non Foundation series trucks into who knows when.
And i would've ordered the first minute I got the invite too, except 318 mile range is just not going to cut it

I got my pre order. I ordered on day and hour one. I’m nervous about the payment. Feel like I’m a fool if I do, and a fool if I don’t. I want to keep it long term, but if I can’t. Does anyone “think” it the foundation edition will hold its value well?
I doubt it. Once the cheaper with a lot more range CTs come out, and the kinks straighten out, who would caugh up the high price just for the badge, (a year later, I might add).

Think back to the MX Signature

So did you ultimately decide to pass? I thought I read somewhere that the drop in range was due to the tires that are on them now vs. when the others will be ready and they’ll be around $470 each. If that extra $2000 is only gonna gain me an additional 22 miles of range, I’ll save that and put it towards supercharging if needed. I’m getting it for towing specifically so I’ll have to wait until I have one and can get real data on the range loss. If it’s really an issue with towing, I’ll just get the range extender when it’s finally available. About 90% of the time it’ll be a daily driver where range will never be an issue. As it stands my wife and I only charge our M3 and MY about once a week.

@scoobysteve0, I won’t presume to tell you what you should/shouldn’t but, but I will speak to what appears to be one factor you are considering weighing - whether depreciation on these Foundation units will be somehow better

Historically, Tesla has some “Founders” and “Signature” (not ‘Foundarion’) series in limited runs of like 200. Of those, the only ones that seem to have demanded any later value differentiarionare eg the extremely early VINs, like 003 etc., that initially went to VIPs and people of note.

These Foundarion CTs are an entirely different beast (pun intended). For one, they’re going to build a lot of them, relatively speaking. For two, none of “us” are getting one of those truly early VINs.

In any remote prudence, you should assume that at best these Founders editions will depreciate the same as any other

At worst, you should assume they’ll depreciate worse. Not only are you starting at a higher number:

REMEMBER THAT FSD ISNT TRANSFERRABLE, THAT YOU WONT BE SELLING THE POWER KIT ATTACHED TO YOUR HOME, etc.,

Meanwhile, PEOPLE WHO PAY TO BE FIRST WILL NOT BE PAYING TO BE FORST A YEAR FROM NOW

The ‘extras’ here, in a resale scenario, reduce down to almost nothing relevant other than the etched badging (not even numbered edition)

either have enough money that you don’t care, or plan to keep it forever, when it comes to depreciation curve

Still keeping options open. No, the add 22 miles are also not worth it to me (more money for lesser tires, more money for a range extender), not worth it.
Here's My prediction: Elon hates not being right, so not too far in the future battery tech will have improved enough to be able to get to the 500 mile mark. Thats when I will jump on it.
(The range extender might never even happen)

I agree there’s a lot of extra cost in getting to the miles he promised. So is the invite still sitting in your Tesla account? Some were saying there’s no option to decline. Do you know what happens if you pass?
