What are the thoughts about repairs for this accident? I'm wondering if the fender flanges on the cast frame are bent or cracked can they be fixed, and if not, does that mean the entire rear casting would need replacing?

The wheel arc is actually a separate piece from the casting, so semi repairable.

If this is true, at least there will be some massive price cuts coming, once the early adopters move on to the next Latest Thing.

Yes it does appear that way, this screen cap of the rear casting does not show those flanges on the main casting so they must be glued or welded in place afterwards. That suggests a relatively straight forward repair for this crash. Source video:

Actually it looks like a pressed sheet metal piece spot welded to the casting

From the reddit thread:

Poster is an auto damage / insurance person, supposedy.

Car taking a turn too fast maybe, got into ct's lane. CT swerves right, car hits side of ct. Makes more sense than a head on.
wonder what the CT insurance company is gonna say......totaled?

If that type of deal happens in US, the insurance company will get a special deal just like they get from hospitals where insurance pays much less to hospital for same service/operation while real people who pay directly have to pay hugely inflated hospital list price.
That's not how car insurance works. The insurance company doesn't "work" with the auto dealer to get some discount on replacing your car. The insurance company writes you a check for: the repair cost of your car plus diminished value, or the value of your car, or, if you opted for something like "replacement cost of a car two years newer" or some such policy, you'll get enough money for that. Thing is, you don't have to repair or replace your car. You can put the money down on a totally different, more expensive car, or get a cheapo used car and pocket the difference, or cash the check and blow it in Vegas. There's no incentive for the insurance company to get you a discount on repair/replacement.

That's why it's important to find out if your policy covers the replacement cost of FSD. If your policy doesn't explicitly cover "after market accessories" you may very well be out of luck.

Note: if you disagree with me, don't argue with me here, discuss it with your insurance agent and get any assurance in writing. Pricing FSD into your policy is a tricky thing. If you tell the insurance company that FSD costs $7,000 but when you crash your CyberTruck a few years from now when it costs $20,000 to add it to even a used Tesla, are they still going to pay whatever value Elon puts on it that day?

1.7mm skin, kinda janky. 3mm would have taken the hit a whole lot better.
Just let me wallow in my misery.
Be glad it wasn't your CT....
Doors are 1.8mm, while the rest is a measly 1.4mm.
Kangaroos are gonna mess this thing!
But, it's still the toughest skin l've seen in the Car World!

I guess you missed the part where Tesla engineers said they were able to engineer the material to meet the specs of the original 3mm thickness in thinner material?

It's a Tesla-owned manufacturer's vehicle, so is without a doubt self-insured by Telsa. So, no insurance company is going to have to deal with this, and we'll never hear anything about the repair process, or whether they even decide to repair it.
