Yep, you are that "one guy"
Guy who what, though?

Has fine to good experiences at dealerships?

Frankly, I think it’s far more tragic that in this country a person can’t easily navigate medical care and legal representation, without far more preparation, knowledge, resources, and self-care.

Whereas something so comparatively unimportant and elitist as purchasing a new car merely requires:

• picking a model/trim that is not in a supply/demand posture that robs buyer of all leverage

• making a take-or-leave offer to purchase on required terms (price, byo-financing, no add-ons)

• requiring the paperwork and car be delivered to my home to finalize sale at my kitchen table

• if terms rejected, wait for one of the other 10 dealers given the same opportunity to respond

Meanwhile, people who *love* Tesla’s model appear to just have an emotional bearing whereby they like to be told a take-it-or-leave-it offer to sell, rather than be the one to communicate a take-or-leave offer to buy

which is fine, but *gestures broadly to the universe* not at all a self-evident “advantage” of the Tesla model

Looks like beast VIN’s are starting to go out (at least to employees and possibly some others). Maybe the “early 2024” estimate I got wasn’t on Elon time. Excited but still assuming mid to second half of 2024.

Anyone else reliving those Christmas Eve childhood butterflies yet? (For inclusivity, replace "Christmas" with your desired holiday) ?

remember, the while Tesla was saying “early 2024” for Beast, they were simultaneously saying “Dec-March” for AWD

presumably, then, “early 2024” meant something different/disrinct from “Dec-March”

I was thinking about this earlier...

Early/mid/late divides the year into only 3 parts. So instead of 3 month quarters, dividing the year that way would be

Jan 1 - Apr 30 = "Early"
May 1 - Aug 31 = "Mid"
Sep 1 - Dec 31 = "Late"

Nuanced variable, not the entire end-to-end transaction.

Buying a Tesla online versus buying any car (insert brand here) in a dealership is at least for me unequivocally better. Took me less than 10 minutes to purchase a Tesla, last time I was at a dealership it was like a 4-6 hour event that sucked all the joy and energy out of me.
Agree with @cvalue13

Found the Bronco I wanted online, dealer 90 minutes away. I knew sticker was the price. Told them I'd take it, all over text, 5 mins. They sent me digital paperwork, signed, paid, showed up. 1 physical thing to sign, then a tour of the car. Not quite as succinct as a single app, but I can't use a word like "unequivocally" in the difference. The problem is variation and lot availability of dealers vs Tesla. I knew what I wanted and after searching any number of sites, I narrowed in on my non-Tesla, much like using Tesla inventory.

Fair assessment but I did highlight “at least for me unequivocally better” because it was based on my experience with dealerships.

Everyone is assuming the choice is in a vacuum/singular when it was my significant other that had dead set on a specific car from a specific dealership. That starts to remove the autonomy of research and selection. Hence my opinion is only based on my unique experience and perspective.

It is up to the seller to provide an experience that satisfies the customer. While there may be exceptions, dealers are not enhancing the buying experience for either purchasers or manufacturers, but instead maintaining their position politically rather than productively. Car dealers and lawyers rank right up there at the top of dissatisfaction surveys. You claim it is so easy to just choose your seller from an app, but first you have to research how to choose an app you can trust.

You have mentioned choosing a doctor as another example, but Insurance companies have similarly inserted themselves counterproductively in that process between provider and client, again maintaining their lucrative position via paid politics.

you’re just claiming this, then moving on to celebrate the naked assertion

meanwhile, you similarly claim that in contrast Tesla’s model doesn’t suffer this same critique

all and only that I’ve said in this thread, is that I’m dubious of both naked assertions, equally, given the range anecdotal experiences relevant to both sides

people bitch about dealership experiences, and bitch about Tesla experiences

Other people don’t have headaches with dealer experiences (myself included), and people don’t have headaches about Tesla experiences

So, this isn’t about me nakedly claiming that only one of these buckets has access to some objective truth/reality

it’s you nakedly claiming that only you in your bucket have that access

Talk about naked assertions, absolutely none of your claims so far have come with anything other than anecdotal personal experience, as have mine, and mine included the disclaimer that I can't speak to other people's experiences and other than local Tesla and car dealers.

One thing about dealers is, if they are mistreating you and you don't like it, you can go to a different one. I flew to TN to pick up my jeep because no dealer in my area would negotiate on pricing, and ended up saving $7000. Even if you have a bad experience this time, and follow through with it in one place... you can go somewhere else the next time. Generally, you can call a dealer and find out the latest thing that they know if you have custom ordered a vehicle.

With tesla, if you are being mistreated and you don't like it, you can go directly to hell. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Everything is automated so if something weird happens (in the order process), not only is it nobody's fault directly, but they can't fix it. If you want to find out the latest piece of information that they know, the answer is either that they don't know it, or they won't tell you. It's not so bad years after a vehicle has launched if you want something in inventory, but for any new launches or custom orders, it's like pulling teeth trying to gain any insight into the process.

Car dealers and car buying experience are rated at the very bottom consistently in US over many years. So, while Tesla may not have solved the problem, car buying experience definitely needs fixing.

With Tesla it is simple, if the car is what you want for the money you are willing to spend you order it. If not you buy something else. They are fully responsible for the whole process. Anyone and everyone's processes are screwed up these days, but when you buy direct you know exactly who is at fault. Easy or not you can get to people at Tesla, and you can deal with different Tesla locations if you think you must.

Having to fly to another state to get screwed over by $7000 less hardly seems like a positive recommendation for dealerships. Having to somehow shop over multiple states is outrageous and daunting.
