Looks like Hardware 4 is maxed out with FSD v13.

So does this mean that FSD v14 (unsupervised FSD) will require Hardware 5?? In one year (or less), are we repeating the Hardware 3 fiasco with current Tesla?

I expect that if someone spends $100k+ for a new Tesla, then he/she should have the latest software and FSD capability for at least a few years! If above is true then the current CT’s FSD capabilities may be outdated in 6-9 months??

HW5 Announcement: Tesla officially announced Hardware 5 (AI 5) at the 2024 shareholder meeting, expected to hit production lines in December 2025 (Tesla Officially Announces FSD Hardware 5.0). It is 10x better in inference power and up to 50x overall compared to hw4, with power consumption up to 800 watts versus 200 watts for hw4.

Current vehicles with HW4, including the Cybertruck, may become outdated within a year, potentially repeating past issues with HW3.

I wonder if they'll offer hardware upgrades to those of us who purchased FSD.

That's if they're able to keep the same form factor. The primary reason you can't get a HW4 retrofit in a HW3 vehicle is because of the form factor.

Yeah, TBH, i am pausing my search/idea of buying CT at this time. IF above is true, FSD v13 is all CT gonna get. While FSD v13 is very good, i am not dropping $124k on CB FS for it to become software outdated by 2026.

I understand cost of hardware, but Teslas cars are not cheap…..and if above is true, Tesla is REALLY short-sighted. Putting in hardware that can only run software for 1 year !! FSD v13 came out in late 2024 as beta. V14 likely comes out later this year. Literally 1 year run.

Imagine if your brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max (or Samsung S25 Ultra) can only run the latest software for 1 year…and then you cannot update thereafter. Except here, you paid $100k, not $1200.

Software can always outgrow hardware, Tesla has no incentive to not use all the available space. Why optimize/ shrink the NN if it fits?

You can't build vehicles with hardware that doesn't exist. HW4 was the available unit. Should they have delayed CT production until HW5?

Cybertruck with 48V and HW4 cameras is likely the most upgradable vehicie in terms of going to HW5 or beyond, should it be necessary.

?!!!
Optimizing NNs is critical for efficiency, scalability, and future-proofing, even if they fit on HW4. Delaying Cybertruck for HW5 would have been impractical given market pressures and HW4’s adequacy for current FSD goals.

I understand. But how about the folks who bought the new Model Y? Does the new Model Y use 48V? How will they feel if they cannot get FSD v14 in another 6-9 months?

Tesla has previously given free HW upgrades to those that purchased FSD. If HW5 is required, and can be retrofitted, they would be hard-pressed to avoid doing so.

As for incentive to optimized…one only has to look at the success of DeepSeek. Optimization of software for such a lean company like Tesla (and Musk) should be top priority regardless of available space! We’re not talking about Windows, right?

Musk has said that software will be what makes Tesla different…so, if true that CT and new Model Y cannot get FSD v14 due to short-sighted memory allocations, then FSD is just bloatware like Windows.

Nope, still using the 15.5V system
So my father’s brand new Launch Edition Y is stuck with FSD v13. And he literally bought it for the promise(s) of FSD.

This is not gonna end well…but i guess Tesla is used to these controversies!

I hope that I am wrong. If i am, then i am back on CT gravy train! :)
