I’m not worried and I don’t accept the premise of this post.

I understand. But how about the folks who bought the new Model Y? Does the new Model Y use 48V? How will they feel if they cannot get FSD v14 in another 6-9 months?
The big factors for upgrades are power, cooling, and cameras. The switch to liquid cooling covered the first, higher voltages and future proofing cirvuit capacity aided the second, and HW4 has the better cameras. So, while it may need to be purpose built, a HW5 upgrade unit for HW4 Model Y should not be an issue. If it is even needed.

It's probably way more complicated than this but why not make the processors and storage plug and play replaceable like a cartridge in the frunk.... There are probably many other components involved.

It mostly is with the MCU/AI unit swappable.
Internally, there are two boards that share the heatsink and on Cybertruck have their our communication interlink.

Version 14 will absolutely run on hardware number four. Do not fret.

So my father’s brand new Launch Edition Y is stuck with FSD v13. And he literally bought it for the promise(s) of FSD.

This is not gonna end well…but i guess Tesla is used to these controversies!

I hope that I am wrong. If i am, then i am back on CT gravy train! :)
The Model Y currently has FSD, and it's wonderful. Promise fulfilled.

I don't understand how you expect Tesla to retroactively support hardware and software for a product that hasn't even been released yet (HW5, future version of FSD).

There are still limitations on the current FSD that prevents it from being a true FSD. So, promised not yet fulfilled. It can’t park that well. And just this weekend, my father’s Model Y pulled itself out of his garage onto his lawn…missed driveway by a whole car width!!

Look at my first post in this thread. Memory is full with v13 on HW4. HW4 has reach its capacity limit with v13.

What are the chances that v14 will be LESS memory hog than v13? Zero chance since it will have more capability than v13. I would bet that v14 will require a lot more memory capacity…and that means that people with HW4 cars cannot use v14 to full capacity or at all.

Best part is no part. But remember the days when old gaming consoles had extra slots for upgrades, memory cards etc. seems they would future proof these with slots to upgrade. Do we think in 5-10 years we will still be on FSD 16 AI7 etc, meaning even AI5 will become obsolete at some point. As long it’s upgradable I’m ok with it or having to swap brains from time to time. I’d rather the screen be snappy quick response then slow loading like my sentry / dash cam footage.

Bought a 2021 Model Y and paid $12k for FSD when "Full self driving is 1-2 years away"
(that car is HW3 and now considered obsolete)

Bought a 2024 CT and paid $8k for FSD when "Full self driving is 1-2 years away"
(now the CT HW4 is not going to be compatible with FSD14, which may or may not be truly FSD)

...............................uhhhhhhhh

It's because the hardware and software is hyper optimized.

But how big does v13 need to be to provide the current performance? How unoptomized is it?

NN size is linked to performance, but you can have a large NN where regions have no function. The network size is fixed at inital design. The functionality is a result of changing the weights of that fixed matrix via training.
This is completely different than typical hand code where adding functionality always requires more code.

Cybertruck release notes callout "• 3x model size scaling" coming soon, that means on HW4.

What is "true FSD"?

FSD isn't a completed/finalized software package you can purchase outright like a 2025 tax software; it's pretty much a live software that is going to be forever in development (or at least with this amount of human resources for the next 8 years to so I would guess).

You can either purchase a subscription to it or you can purchase a long term package that allows you to upgrade your hardware when/if feasible.

Have you actually read any of the fine print for the program?

This thread is packed with more maybes, possiblys, and what-ifs than a conspiracy theory subreddit. I just need a straight-up yes, you can upgrade to 5, or no, sit your ass down. The speculation in here is heavier than my Cybertruck fully loaded for overlanding hahaha.
