I like the idea of the hard shell especially if we go into bear country.
I don't understand this.

A bear can open up a hard-shell pop-up camper as quickly as you can peel back the lid on a can of sardines.

I have been looking at traditional pop up campers. Camping World had a couple for a pretty good online price but they upped the price by 50% when I got there after all their fees. They were fixer uppers too. Long story short not happy with them after driving 2.5 hours each way.

I randomly came across the Trailmanor brand online after I got home. I like the idea of the hard shell especially if we go into bear country. If I still had an ICE vehicle I would go with the traditional non pop-up but wanted to maximize range. A normal pop up would probably get better range but this is a good compromise. I will add more information as we take it on trips. This is a 2720. So it’s about 27’ popped out and 20’ popped in. Plus if you have the swivel hitch it goes down to 18’. So you can fit it in a garage. Also the quality of this 2005 seems to be better than the 2019 and 2022 canvas pop up campers I viewed. These could have been abused but just sharing my brief experience.

On the way home (about 40 miles) it was 90% 65-70mph and 10% around 50mph and it showed 600wh/mi. This was flat and about 82°. So pretty ideal conditions.

100% range 205 miles
80% range 164 miles.

Still sucks compared to diesels like I’m used to but we would have our dogs anyway so stopping every 2-2.5 hours is about right.

205 mile range on 100% is awesome!

Thanks for the information... Does FSD work while towing? If not have people come up with a hack to get FSD to work?
it does not work. If the trailer does not have trailer brakes, it does work!

Do you think a canvas pop up offers the exact same protection then? From what I’ve read some campgrounds won’t even allow soft pop ups. I don’t think it would stop a determined bear at all but it should at least give you more time.

I’m more interested in the reliability, durability and ease of setup though. I don’t claim this to be bear proof.

Called manufacturers for a model of truck trailer that pop's up as hard-sided.

They all won't do the customization for Cybetruck.

Maybe we can organize a campaign with enough customers for make it worthwhile for them.

I think this is the only configuration that won't take this much range hit.

So reluctant to take my 4,200 lbs Coleman after seeing 78 miles on 100% charge.

National parks in bear country don’t allow “soft” pop-ups. Too easy for bears to munch and run.

This is the new worry-wort "safety" freaks who are afraid of their own shadow. The government has gone overboard deciding they know what's best for us.

People have been camping in canvas ground tents for many decades, right in the middle of bear country, without a care (besides the common sense precaution of keeping food out of the tent). My father used to work in Yellowstone to pay his college tuition, and his best friend would do the waltz with any willing bears. How do you think anyone backpacks through bear country? Yes, they sleep on the ground in tents! Do you know anyone who has been mauled while sleeping?

People have lost their minds.

Yep. Agreed. You can camp in a tent there in the tent only areas. You can camp in an rv at the rv sites only if you have hard sides. Maybe they notified the above average bears first.

It is a fairly regular thing. Multiple incidents so far this year. I was camping with my family at a kayak-in spot on Lake Yellowstone in 1995 when we were attacked in our tents while sleeping. We were successful in chasing the grizzly off, and no one was injured, but we were lucky. We had taken every precaution, including separating our boats from the tents, using suspended bear canisters for food. Ten people have been killed in Glacier National Park in bear attacks. Mostly hikers.

How? Mine will not allow FSD when towing - unless I turn off towing mode entirely.
I keep getting asked and can't tell you, I figured everyone's was the same. Second to last update is when it happened to mine. Before it wouldn't but driving with my trailer I figured I'd use cruise control but FSD was allowed. I do notice when I have a trailer connected I can cancel the trailer mode too but after 1 miles it will turn it on again because it detects the weight and alerts on screen and turns it back on. As for FSD not sure why yours doesn't work. I'll have to post a video.

So do you think with most deaths by bear attacks attributed to hikers that the Park Service should outlaw hiking in the Park? Because tent-camper attacks are much more rare, and they outlawed that. When hiking you can accidently come between a mother bear and her cubs. While sleeping in a tent you are not a threat.

Try to think logically. Millions of people have died on the nations roadways yet no one is in a hurry to outlaw driving by amateurs. In contrast, since 1784 it's estimated that only 11 people have been killed by bears inside tents in the lower 48. And that includes all the people who do dumb things like bring food into their tents and/or have offensive perfumes and deodorants. Your chances of dying in a car accident on your way to the campsite are so much higher than your chances of dying from a bear attack that it's not even in the same ballpark.

This is an irrational fear. I asked Grok to summarize bear attack deaths inside tents in the lower 48:

General bear attack statistics provide context. For instance, BearVault reported 82 fatal human/bear conflicts by wild brown bears in North America since 1784, but this is not specific to tents (Bear Attack Statistics). Vox noted 71 fatal bear attacks in America since 1900, half in six parks, but again, not tent-specific (The parks where you’re most likely to be killed by a bear). These figures suggest the 11 identified tent-related fatalities are a small subset, aligning with the rarity of such events.

Conclusion
Based on the detailed list from the Wikipedia page and cross-verified with other sources, it is estimated that 11 people have been killed by bear attacks while inside tents in the lower 48 states. This number reflects historical data up to the current date (May 1, 2025), with no additional fatal incidents identified post-2021 in the provided searches. The analysis acknowledges potential underreporting for older incidents but provides a robust estimate given the available data.

@Hunter71294, great numbers. Can you show your setup fully deployed at a camping site?
