Do we know if this is a CT specific problem? Could Tesla be using the same part on the Y?

What did you say in the service appointment request?

I'm thinking of listing the part number and just telling them what happens: the wireless charger always overheats my phone to the point where it doesn't charge much at all.
So I previously had the car in with this problem so this wasn’t the first interaction.
I use the Tesla wireless batteries in both our cars on the charge pads. They both charge and can be charged wirelessly which is pretty convenient. They are handy for when you leave the car without a lot of charge because they just MagSafe into your phone. They also have nice little tilt for setting up miss Rachel or cocolmelon in a restaurant. When you’re done with them you just throw them back on the charge pad in the car and they charge relatively slowly until the next time you need them. Mindless. Sometimes I have the Jowua wireless controllers on there too but they seem to handle the heat ok.
Anyway, the Cybertruck warped one of the Tesla batteries and I took it to Tesla. They came back with “within spec” and made me call the Tesla shop which sent me a new one. That one also warped.
So today, when I saw the post, I sent a picture of the second warped battery. They tried to schedule this as a mobile appointment and since I wasn’t that enthused about having another mobile tech give me a tour of the low voltage system, I sent a message with the part number and they immediately responded with thank you and changed the appointment to a SC appointment with a loaner.

Thanks for this. I made a service request and sent the pic of the new charger part number, asking to have it installed. They accepted it, but they also added a task to install my beast's light bar - which I don't yet want. (I'm hoping there's a revised version in the pipeline that doesn't require gluing it to the windshield). Anyway, I updated the service request and said I didn't want the light bar installed, so we'll see if they still want me to come in.

Maybe ask for the bar and sell it on eBay? I see a fair number of people doing this and they are apparently quite valuable.

Good thought. Could then put the money toward an aftermarket one, I suppose. But, I'm curious to see if they've heard of anything in the pipeline.

Update:

- Tesla Service messaged me saying there was nothing that could be done about the overheating issue and they closed the ticket
- I messaged back, mentioned that I’d heard there was a substantially revised part that addressed the overheating issue
- They messaged back, acknowledged there was a new part, and reopened the ticket.
- Cost Estimate: $0.00
Hahahahaha - at least they acknowledged you were correct.

Excellent! Was about to attempt disconnect as I was using my cup holder to hold my phone, due in heat levels and minimal charge benefit.
I’ve been driving with my iPhone 16 Pro Max facedown on the charger for over a year, basically using it as holder, since it would toast my phone otherwise. Really hoping this works, haha!!

This thread showed up just in time. My FSCT is at the SC now getting other work done. I just texted them a replacement request.

Nice,

just made request through the app for the repair. Hopefully they can send mobile tech to my house to address the issue.

I'm curious if anyone has a VIN range where these may need to be replaced. I haven't noticed any really heat
Me either. I have a 2024 CT. I never knew this was a thing. I have a iPhone 16 Pro Max and never noticed a heat issue ever. Then again, my iphone is almost always near 100% to begin with (from keeping it charged inside a building) when I drive my Cybertruck, so maybe it never has to charge enough to experience the heat issue?

On a side note, our 2023 Model Y won't charge our phones at all. Apparently the little bump for the camera lenses on the back of the phone won't allow the phone to contact close enough for it to pick up any charge.

The SC asked me to specify what phone I was charging, so this might be a sign it’s possibly a model or brand specific issue. It does it to both my wife’s and mine though, and both are different models, but both Apple.
I'm sure it is phone model dependent because both of our Samsung phones have always charged quickly and with no more heat that we see at home with our wireless chargers (just warm, not hot). I have a case on my Samsung, but it is relatively thin. I'm sure the thickness of any phone case being used is a factor too.

I was under the impression the heat was being generated in the iPhone, not in the charger, so I'm not sure how heatsink fins on the charger is going to fix a phone that gets hot! I think it has more to do with the alignment and distance of the inductive coils.

Our home wireless chargers are "puck" style, and they are smaller than the phones they charge so the phone can be centered on the puck. Vehicles move so they must hold the phone captive (but not all phones are the same dimensions). I think this is where the alignment problem comes from.

Maybe the new charger has multiple coils inside, with different positioning, so the charger can sense the best coil position to use, ie, the coil with the best alignment to the phone being used. The phone industry should have standardized coil positioning with respect to the bottom and side of the phone, instead they required users to center their phones on the pads manually.

Apple developed a MagSafe centering solution, unfortunately they made it a proprietary solution requiring royalties instead of donating the MagSafe standard to the industry at no charge like Tesla did with the North American Charging Standard (NACS). Walled gardens are only good for the "King" who owns the walled garden, not the customers who buy the products.
