Would everyone be happier if they were 0-5? Or -2 to +2 with default being zero?
Not me. Far too often it either completely misses the Speed Limit sign, guesses wrong, or just changes for no reason at all. For example, driving down my farm to market road in Texas the speed limit is 60. Cybertruck thinks the limit is 70. At least until I get to one area where, for no reason, it changes the speed limit to 25 and slams on the brakes. 1/4 mile later it changes back to 70. Funny thing is, it consistently misses any and all 70 mph signs.

What I would prefer is that I be able to touch the speed limit sign on the screen and have it pop up a selection of speed limits that I can choose from. Then it can use the mad-sloth-max algorithm to set the FSD speed based on what I chose.

Or keep the max speed settings user set-able.

I love that idea. Let us correct the speed for a particular area we frequent by pressing on the sign. With geolocation memory.

In order to solve that ”problem “ the U.S. needs to eliminate all speed limits on the interstate highways except when entering a potentially congested area such as entering city limits. This is the way the roads are on the autobahn (Germany) and autopista (Italy). In those countries vehicles default to the non-hammer lane because they are following the law. In the U.S. we have speed limits and if you are going the speed limit in the left lane you are not violating the law, as those going over the speed limit are. Time to focus on our legislators to change the laws rather than citizens following their laws🤗😇.
Wrong. The left lane is already meant (by law) for passing slower vehicles, regardless of speed relative to the posted speed limit. This should be emphasized more before issuing driver's licenses! 🤦‍♂️ If people (or AI drivers) obeyed this more it would save the country billions in better travel efficiency and non-sensical, countless, lives lost caused by these " the left lane is mine" drivers...

US Left Lane Laws Quick Summary

  • No federal rule: State-specific, but all 50 states require left lane for passing only—return to right/center after.
  • At speed limit? Legal if actively passing, but illegal to block faster traffic (impeding flow, even if under limit).
  • "Keep Right" Rule: Slower-than-normal traffic must stay right; applies nationwide.
  • Variations: Strictest in IL, NJ (no cruising); lenient in AK, MD (if not too slow). Trucks often banned.
  • Penalties: $50–$500 fines; points possible if accident caused.
  • Tip: Cruise right to avoid rage/tickets—left for overtaking only.

Click your microphone button when you are at a bad spot and say “bug report incorrect speed limit”. I try to do that right after passing a sign in case it also sends any recording back to Tesla. It’s been hit or miss, but a few spots have been corrected.

I do that but with very little experience of anything being fixed. I still think we should be able to correct a speed preference for a particular stretch of road that applies only to our car.

There are two related but separate issues here. The lack of granularity with the new speed profiles (chill, normal, fast) and the inability to read speed signs accurately. If speed sign reading was accurate, then I think the speed profiles would work perfectly fine, because you would be providing your driving preference in relation to the actual and accurate posted speed limit.

Does anybody know why it can’t seem to read speed signs and interpret them correctly? It occasionally misreads them (for example, when there is a truck speed limit of 55 but a car speed limit of 70), but more commonly just misses the sign that’s in front of it, or misassigns the speed.

it should be able to read signs visually (since that’s how we humans do it), but it appears that there’s something much more complex going on than what the camera sees. Anybody know what the process is, or if there’s any possibility of fixing it? I’ve not seen anything speaking to the latter.

and yes, sorry, I know this is a 14 upgrade thread, but this is at least a little bit germane too whether it’s going to be useful or not.

I don't know why it can't use data integrated with other map services on speed limit and cross check with what it visually sees.

Also FSD is currently unreliable to get me home. Near my house there are 2 ways to get back from the main highway, each about 3 miles away. If I go one way, it wants to take me out of the way actually, instead of making a easy right turn it makes a left and then U turn in a neighborhood. The other way it will get me home but doesn't take the shortest route, and when I turn to the shortest route it would want me to make a U turn. It's a newish road (5 years) and is indicated on the map so I have no clue why it doesn't drive properly.

It's great for a lot of situations but really suffers. The folks that can use it all the time are lucky.

Cool. What state? Got a picture of one?
They use these electronic speed signs on the PA Turnpike in areas prone to weather effects. Even tho elevation rarely exceeds 3k', the snow/fog effects are real.

Not that ANYBODY pays any attention mind you...

I have zero expertise in enforcement but I feel like in 2025 this should be enforced in a more sophisticated way than wasting the time of an officer sitting on the side of the road with a radar gun. I mean, there are drones and cameras that can measure speeds to within a decimal with extreme accuracy and ID the driver better than a human ever could.
There are better uses of @ABILISK ’s time.
I've been expecting the PA pay road system to do math and automatically levy fines for decades now. Ofc making a comfort stop should negate all that. Unless they sensor up the rest areas...

I’m not against voice commands, it’s just that usually someone else is talking all the time 🤣
All the time! On a recent summer expedition to Big Snow, my co-pilot had to dad-out and silence the back seat chatterers multiple times. Kind of like having to exit the Hoth asteroid field in order to send a clear transmission ...

If the FSD 14 launch is anything to go by, don’t expect the CTs to get it until midnight. Y’all can go to sleep on time today.
