Not sure if sanding will correct it. It looks tarnished. I sent him an email asking how can we fix it even though he told me they can’t get it out.

I don’t know how this stuff happens to me. I’m reaching out to the community before I try to talk to Out Of Spec detailing.
I took my Cybertruck to my detailing shop for iron removal and then clear PPF installed. Should be simple right?
My Autobody guys down the street polished out a scratch in the front using the certified Tesla method and it was perfect. So I told the detail crew, if you see any areas that need a polish do it as I’m confident in the abilities of my autobody guys. Long story short, the front and the rear tailgate had some weird marks.
o thought, okay we just need to polish it out. So I’m going to focus on the tailgate because the front is done and it looks good.
So the first photo is how I got it back from the detailers. It looked not to bad and honestly the front looked worse so I said can you fix it. They said sure.
so today I picked it up and it’s worse.
the autobody guy said he couldn’t get the marks out and it’s in the metal. But it looks completely different now.
I’m going to email him tomorrow and say I am really not satisfied. He’s already said there is nothing he can do so I’m wondering about a second opinion. I am thinking this might need barkeepers friend? I wanted to stay away from that but now I don’t know what this is so if you don’t know what it is, how can you fix?
In my mind you sand the panel down using the Tesla method, how can it come out looking like this?!
This is a weird one. I’m just taking a shot in the dark asking if anyone has any ideas how this happened or what to do.
He also said under their light when they were sanding you don’t see these marks.

Just went through the same thing but with a Tesla certified body shop that Tesla sent my truck to. They messed it up so bad Tesla gave me almost 8k in service credit. I just ended up wrapping it.

Hi, My 40 years experience in cosmetic restoration of many grades of stainless steel leads me to believe the following.
First the finish of our Cybertrucks is on the surface of a consistent grade of thick stainless steel. This means that scratches can be removed by matching the same grit grade and directional removal pattern that matches the surrounding finish. When woven pads are used to resurface the stainless steel, microscopic particles are left behind that washing will not remove. This, along with environmental conditions, is what causes our Cybertrucks to quickly discolor when new. It is my opinion, that after the technician removed the scratches, the stainless was not thoroughly cleaned of the microscopic contamination. If clear wrap was put over the area, it sealed in the contamination.
Its my opinion that surface contamination is causing the un-uniform finish. The wrap must be removed to solve the problem. If the repaired resurface finish matches the surrounding area, CYBERBRITE will remove any oxidation contamination that remains. I believe this might be proof that Cybertrucks that are wrapped may have contamination under the wrap that, long term, could have corrosive effects on the stainless under the wrap. I have see that in my profession, not related to the automotive industry.

Please private message me is have a few questions, if you don't mind.

I can for sure try it. He said that under light you can’t see the contamination but couldn’t get the marks out. So it is possible they were not cleaning it properly as you said. I’m sure they sanded uniformly, they are very good.
They did the best they could then sent it back over to the retailer who just put the 3M PPF back on, which made it worse and made it really show up.
The area (tailgate) is isolated, can easily remove the PPF and try Cyberbrite.
I’m sure they would want to know how to fix this as well and would be open to testing your method to getting it right.

It might be why they always push 3M stealth wrap as it would hide these marks. Most people probably go with a colored PPF film so they don’t see these contamination marks or smudges as they look like. I of course went for clear as I wanted to keep the stainless steel look but make it easier to keep clean and protect against scratches.

I thought so too. I just can’t believe he would do that but stranger things have happened. He has worked on my Gwagens, my Ferrari… I asked him the first time before working on the Cybertruck if he knew the Tesla method… that you have to do the entire panel. He probably didn’t do the actual work but would oversee whoever was doing it.

Another question for my piece of mind. Do you think this is unacceptable appearance wise? Sometimes I think I’m too picky and now it’s worse!
It cost me 6k CDN for the detail, polishing and PPF.
I really thought I could trust them to get it right.
I'm not picky when it comes to the Cybertruck surface and I may let it get a bit "rusty" and marked, etc, I think it looks cool. Not uptight as most about panel alignment.

But your tailgate looks like junk. They need to make it right. It looks like it has a massive bruise and it would annoy me every time I looked at it. The detailer should be ashamed.

Thank you! Sometimes I need some validation that I’m not being too nit picky.
it’s pretty upsetting as before it wasn’t that bad! So I feel like by being picky I made it worse.
Hopefully I can get it fixed if we can figure out what it is!

That doesn’t qualify as ‘ruined’ to me. That said, they definitely messed up. Cyber-acne :-(

Why didn’t you clean it yourself, or did you and it didn’t work? It is hard to blame detailing people for not knowing how to detail a Cybertruck; there just aren’t that many around and the super hard stainless has gotta be difficult to get a uniform look with. What about the guy that polishes Cybertruck’s? For sure they could fix it.
