Hopefully Tuesday or Wednesday next week. Waiting for the bars to arrive, maybe tomorrow…

This is the perfect option for a mirror if they end up making it for the Cybertruck

Mirror Vision System
Yes, Magna and Gentex have the right setup at the mirror. Falcon has a side/rear camera system and mirror based on wifi/SIM-card system but you have to use their cameras. I have been thinking of mounting the side/rear cameras to the upper light bar and trying to use the power that is up there. Then only the mirror needs power inside the vehicle and can probably get it where the inside camera gets it.

So far I haven't found anything that will work for this. Unlike others, I don't care who wants it for what reason. I just know that I want it for myself.

The closest thing that I've found to what we want is this.

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_220GENFDM3/Gentex-GENFDM3LN.html?tp=66448

99.9% of options out there are for adding a backup camera, not adding a digital rear view. The reason the display in the truck sucks so bad is that it's way too wide of a field of view. Cars appear even further away than in the passenger side mirror. Great for backing up, terrible for a rear view mirror unless they add some way to crop it significantly. I'm finding we want something from ~45-50 degrees field of view, while most options are 140-180 degrees. That should get us close to real life size for the image.

The issue with the option above, is that in addition to the camera being pretty deep for seemingly no reason (making license plate mounting questionable), it is also designed to mount inside of the rear windshield. Meaning it's not waterproof, and not suitable for use outside of the vehicle.

Tesla could alleviate this quite a bit by allowing us to crop tighter on the rear camera, but I suspect it doesn't have anywhere near the resolution needed to be usable at the needed ~4-6x crop.

I'm posting what I'm finding in case anyone else is also looking. I can only spend so many hours researching this at a time, trying to figure out new ways to string words together to try to mean "digital rear view mirror, that isn't meant to be used as a backup camera".
You and I (and clearly others) are doing the same research. I am still focusing on a system that has/supports both side and rearview cameras, and would mount to the sides and back of the upper light bar and use the power available there. If we could tap into our lifetime premium connectivity for the cameras that would solve remaining issues.

I sort of gave up for now. I still want to make the change, but I just cannot find the right product. The only option that I would know would be good is if I bought something from an OEM and integrated it myself. Making my own camera housing, custom electronics to spoof the canbus that the mirror would expect... and like I can do that. I know enough about enough things to be able to do that, and have CNC machines to make OEM quality parts... But it would take 2 or 3 months working full time on it and in the end it would be too expensive to develop into a product for other people to buy (which would justify the time spent) since it relies on the cost of OEM parts from other manufacturers.

I think that the 2 systems I am looking at do not require anywhere near that kind of effort but I only spend a few hours of research every couple of months so I hear you.

The main thing is the viewing angle. I've only found one place with a 50 degree camera. almost everything is 170 degrees, which is not helpful because we already have that on the screen. OEMs that integrate it into their cars have 2 cameras. one for backup, one for digital rearview. Tesla didn't do this, and aftermarket options are geared towards cars that don't have a backup camera (so they are geared towards being a backup camera).

Curious minds are curious...installed!?
Not yet, busy building a Gloss Black "Baja Build" and our new modular bed rack/cap for this weekends off-road adventure. Hopefully next week or week after.

I added a GM HD rearview mirror to both my trucks and my trailer. It requires a Fakra cable connection and 12v supply. Seems like it could be adapted to your requirements. My cameras were from the C8 Corvette application, and "sharkfin" from a ZL1 Camaro and mirrors from Silverados., but there are many other GM applications. Here is a view from the trailer camera.

We printed a size up sleeve for the oem mount bracket and now it fits into the oem mirror stalk. Will finish the camera tomorrow.
