Tesla says they will not use any exiting equipment and will not replace existing equipment.

So they want to leave the existing load center on the outside of the house and the smaller one inside the wall of the detached garage and place new load centers on the wall next to the old ones.

The conduit to the garage is underground and into the wall with the smaller load center built into the wall. They want to bypass it, drill a hole in the wall and mount a new load center on the outside of the garage. They made it sound like even if I replace the garage load center with a larger one they would still bypass it with a new one mounted on the outside of the house.

Yup, you're original box will be nothing but the main service disconnect. Your sub panel will probably stay exactly where it is but rerouted to the fastest. They do this to place the gateway in between your main service and everything else effectively making Tesla your new service provider.

Do they NEED to set up a new load center to do this? Probably not, but I'm pretty sure they do this because it's a requirement to pass inspection. The new load center is no longer connected to your service panel, the new Tesla gateway becomes a middle man and negotiates everything, including your grid usage.

Edit: they aren't allowed to move your grid service connection, which would make things a lot simpler.

They extend all the circuits in the house to a new load center? You can't have a SPAN load center then? Was really wanting to replace the exiting load center with something like the SPAN load center or just one that would accommodate anything needed. They don't make one that gives them the ability to run the main power out to a gateway or other type of transfer switch?

SPAN currently has some kind of deal with it and Powerwalls. I wonder how they do the install for those?

This kind of makes sense for the main load center on the house but why bypass the one on the garage and mount a new load center outside?

They are going to move all the wires for all the circuits in the house over to load center C? Seems like a lot of extra work. Not sure how that is done?

The drawing if my guess at what they are doing.

If your entire service is being protected, then I believe they may be able to install the gateway upstream of the panel. But if the whole house is too much (which it often is) then they will move some of the loads to the gateway.
