What you are talking about is (gasp) socialism. You pay taxes that benefit other people? the NERVE!
That's not socialism, but uhh...

Yeah, that's what taxes do. I do believe we should try to make sure they're not regressive, but others disagree.

We do agree that roads are a limited quantity, and we need to pay for them somehow, and encourage more efficient use of them, right?

Actually, I’m with the government on this. Most states pay for their roads with a gas tax. An EV puts the same wear and tear (if not more) on the roads. Miles driven just makes more sense. And I’m a guy who drives 90 miles a day commuting.
IMO: Miles driven is going to just create many new issues of monitoring and bypassing monitoring. That would mean more taxes (gov administrative jobs) on top of it to manage the intake of a new miles tax. More laws, more laws broken, busier courts and judges, etc. In Illinois, we need 2x the amount of government jobs per capita to get done what other states do so it could cost us twice as much, LOL.

It sounds practical until you work it out full life cycle of what it takes to actually happen.

It’s an easy solution. When you renew your plates, they check your odometer. Pay for the miles driven. I drive a lot more miles than the average person, which unfortunately means I should pay more. It’s only fair.

If they could make the odo and safety check easy and quick... maybe even have all the stickers there so they can slap them on.

I don't know. It is more effort to have someone paid to mark things down a checklist.

Newer cars have over the air... maybe only make it an option for them?

Odometers are cheated and often even though its breaking a law. I myself work from home late shift. I put very few miles on my vehicles, I would be under constant audit. In fact, I have to keep sending pictures of my odometer already to my insurance company because they don't believe me when they request an update for my insurance break I get.

I just think it’s only fair to pay my fair share as a future EV owner. Just think about it for a moment. EV’s are a bit “chunky” when compared to ICE vehicles. That weight puts lots of wear and tear on the roads. Unless you think FSD will work on a broken down dirt road, we have to pay our portion.

Sure they are. I’ve even got the software to do it on one of my two vehicles. However, like most people, I’ve got a decent job and would choose paying a few bucks in taxes over prison. I’m pretty sure the vast majority has the same mindset.

Sounds good *but* that would most certainly require every DMV/currency exchange to hire an additional person. That cost would obviously be passed on to the people.

I don’t think we need to have someone check. Self report. When you sell your car I believe you have to put the milage down in the paperwork. You could be audited then or random audit like the IRS does for income tax.

Why? They record the mileage every time I bring my car or truck in for its emissions inspection. What would this extra person do?

For reference, I am a no emissions inspections county so I am no expert there. Perhaps you provided a good clue though. Maybe EV's should retain inspections just as ICE vehicles do though the same process in place. This keeps the current folks employed during the transition to EV without creating more government interaction. FWIW my DMV is awful, terrible, horridly slow. Lines are typically a half a block long at all times and under no circumstance would I want anything there to take longer than it already does, :)

Don’t worry, I could go off all day on why my county is one of the four in the whole state forced into this nonsense. However, it’s nothing like the DMV. It takes all of about five minutes, and that includes waiting in line. I’ve actually come to appreciate it only because some sneaky politician weaseled a full vehicle inspection into the mix. (Headlights, brake lights, etc.) Its amazing how many people refuse to replace a freakin’ light bulb until it’s the only way they can renew their license plates.

...That money is paying for the vaccinations and keeping people from spreading the cases... Are you really saying you shouldn't have taken that Tylenol because your fever went down?

Anyhow, I'm wondering how they'll get mileage without costing us more than we're making off it.

But per mile would get more low-range EVs on the road than big flat fees like we're seeing in some states.

Actually a very large chunk of that is just pork! Very disappointing! If you really cared you would just fund what needs to be funded.

Not every one has that. You need a pretty old car in California to trigger it, even.

This is gibberish. 'Pork' means 'funding or projects added to a bill for votes for passage'. It doesn't mean the projects or fund were wasted or unneeded. Pork hasn't been allowed in bills since Clinton was in office.

With Teslas ( and future vehicles I imagine) it can be uploaded randomly, given to whomever and at their whim.

I watched a video on "WHAM BAMM TESLA CAM" wherein a valet appeared to have crashed a Tesla into another vehicle or two...and the owner requested some "_____ report" Tesla refused so the owner went to a person who retrieved the info and HOLY CRAPOLY was the report detailed, almost to the point of "you farted 24 times last week hence air quality analysis requests you eat less spicey tacos and consume lower amounts of beer the nights before"!

WOWWWWWWWWWW!
