Real range on Lightning better than CT dual motor!?

I haven't had a flat in fifteen years. I have never used the spare since the 20th century.

i used to carry a full-sized spare. Now I wonder if it's at all useful. My last 200+k have been without incident, at least none that I couldn't limp away from.

Lucky you,
One time was enough for me and now I have a full size spare tire in each car i have.

Diehard - Some 3rd party will make you an awesome hitch mounted spare tire mount that will articulate out of the way for you. Between Kevlar sidewalls, foam goo, and an onboard compressor I thinks someone will make really good repair kit for even the worst blowouts in the wild. For most of us full size spares are a waste of space and weight. They are hard to fit in the rotation and end up wasted after 10 years of non use.
Until that fateful night you need one, 100 miles from Nowheresville. BTW there are already some off the shelf hitch mounted spare tire mounts that lever down to pavement level with an extended cheater bar to handle the load and still allow you to pull a medium size 10K trailer to boot.

It is good to have options. Thanks for sharing. I just hope this is not an after thought for Tesla. Adding to the length and messing up the aerodynamic of the truck during that 99.99% that I don’t need it would bug me. I love Rivian solution for this issue. If CT had that, those CT owners that believe they are luckier than me could always take the tire out and use that space for storage.

How would you damage a wheel like that so thoroughly? O-o

Los Angeles, CA, 75mph on the Carpool line. It was complitely unexpected! The tire just exploded (sorry I do not know if this word works in this case, english is not my native language). I felt like a bomb exploded and threw my car on the left shoulder. I do not think at that moment the tire was so bad as it looks on the picture. It took almost two miles I drove on the flat tire to change 4-5 lines and took the first exit. I had a spare tire and I was so happy I can replace it right there and drive home ( to SF).

2. It is touted that F-150 Lightning will have all these thousands of service locations…
But like Jaguar and LandRover few will have any techs qualified to repair an electric Vehicle, much less experienced…

I’ve been driving since around 1981. During those 40 years, I’ve never had to use a spare tire. I’ve had numerous nails and screws that caused leaks, but nothing that warranted a side-of-the-road tire swap. I did once get half a semi trailer’s brake drum thrown at me while driving on the freeway, resulting in two nearly instantaneous tire blowouts, but having only one spare tire, it remained worthless.

Spare tires are overrated for most situation.

My spouse has a similar story! She was cross-country in her truck (her first car was the grandparents' farm truck) and had a truck drop a load of recycle lumber with nails into the lane in front of her. Three flats.

She was carrying two spares.

Moral of the story: You can never have too many spares ;)

I think a new pair of shorts and seat would be in order as well, glad you lived to tell the story and share your knowledge, ouch. Spares are handy things to have I hear. I have used a few, and changed a few for others.

One time while still in the military (National Guard Drill Weekend) me and a few of my buddies pull over to help two little old ladies on the side of the interstate, they had a flat tire, had them stay in the car, we had the tire changed in 5 minutes like a pit crew, and sent them on their way, it was fast and funny. Each man had a job to do and made for a interesting story for the ladies to tell at the next bridge game.

Ditto, and I beat on mine off-roading. Still haven't had a flat in over a decade, despite all kinds of rocks, branches, etc...

So what is "Plan B" for those "Anti-Spare drivers soon to be pedestrians" out there when you have that "not plug-able moment" and find yourself not in your driveway and 100 miles from anywhere on a weekend at night in the mountains and it's snowing and you did not stay in a Holiday Inn last night? Just wondering how that is gonna play out. What would of been a 15 minute break in the action is now possibly a few hours waiting for a flatbed tow to civilization then awaiting a few days for a spare tire pre-mounted on a rim to be shipped in because where you ended up has no 24 hour tire shop with attached warehouse for that monstrous tire. I don't
think FedEX or UPS has that airdrop delivery method perfected just yet nor able to fly in such a heavy object to your exact location with the drone thingy. I am listening.
