The Cybertruck is the only truck I own, and overall, I like it. However, the rearview mirror is terrible. As shown in the attachment, the camera is unreliable in the rain—even when the rain isn’t heavy.

I hope there was something can clean the lens when driving.

The side view mirrors show the view to the rear, all but the last few yards of your lane. And the rear camera works more than adequately to let you know if someone is tailgating, even in the rain.

I'm surprised so many motorists have trouble with this. What exactly do you hope to see back there besides other traffic?

I have avoided two major accidents, by being aware of my surroundings.

I like to know what’s going on behind me, and the 25 years I have been driving has made muscle memory that doesn’t need to be messed with.

I live in the PNW and 80% of the 299 miles I’ve driven, I en been frustrated with the shit rear camera design. im already about to drill a hole in my brand new truck because of it, if i can find someone who’s happy with the rear camera washer mod to talk me into it.

Thats great you don’t need the rear view, but it’s okay for us to be unhappy about this terrible design.

You thought it was going to be better ? ?. Def isn’t my favorite but I knew it was a crappy rear view mirror situation when I was going to buy it. I switch back and forth from my M3 and other cars so it’s always a quick re learn
Some people have gotten the larger rear view camera video mirror that looks much better but still not sure how that would look in the rain.

My problem is it simply wasn’t given the time more than they did for CT

I’d put my left pinky on Tesla’s engineering team being able to keep water droplets off a camera lens.

I’m not even in here complaining about it…until I see someone throwing a silly narrative you should just learn to drive without a rear view mirror guys.

This looks way better to me and you can look at the mirror location as you would regularly but again not sure if it has a rain cap on it for when it rains. Other option instead of drilling for a wiper is some sort of hood over the camera ? Maybe some rain ex

I didn't say I don't like to be aware of traffic behind me, of course I do. I'm saying the side view mirrors and the rear camera, even in the rain, are more than adequate to be fully aware of all the traffic behind you. Use your side view mirrors more, and you will see what I mean, They show everything behind, except for things very close behind in your own lane. And even a wet rear view camera will show cars immediately behind you, in all the detail you need for total traffic awareness.

It's really just a matter of understanding how to use those side mirrors and how much of the lane behind you they actually cover. If you are squinting at the center screen, trying to get the big picture from a rain-smeared rear camera, you are doing it wrong.

This ain't rocket science! Not even close.

I didn't say that. But I have driven thousands of miles in work trucks (box trucks) with no rearview mirror, work vans with no rear windows or rear view mirrors, even a garbage truck with no rear view mirror. The garbage truck was the most difficult, because the back of the truck was wider than the cab, which meant the side mirrors did not converge into my lane for about 3 car lengths behind. And there was no rear camera.

The Cybertruck has none of those challenges. It actually has a rear view for that blind spot. Even if it's rain blurred, it still lets you see the car behind you.

The crappy rear-view cam is not a critical safety issue, but it's still crappy. Even the pillar cams have a better image. ?‍♂

Not sure why the rear camera feature is so trivialized ... by most accounts it is a poor implementation and was the cheapest to get the minimum functionality.
  • Isn't the rear camera used for FSD? eg monitoring cars coming up straight from behind and turn on turn signal to go around you when you are about to make a lane change?
  • Isn't it used for back up warnings? (in lieu of ultrasonic sensors that new Tesla's don't have)
  • Isn't it used for [auto or manual] parallel and backed in parking?

I believe the rear camera is no different than the others, but the vehicle aero ends up keeping it wet/dirty.

You could just stop every 1/4 mile, get out and wipe it off!
