From looking at the pic , I’d just drill it out and tap it and screw in a drain plug. Don’t overthink it people :)
This is a great possibility. Just gotta be sure there are no filings from the drill point that gets up in there or a new DU will definitely be in his future ?

It’s a no lose situation, they already told him it needed replaced
with it being on the bottom it would be easy to control shavings and rinse out after. I used to shove a piece of shop rag in holes like that and just did it out after. Shop vac nozzle up against the drill but and tap will get 90% of the shavings. I’d certainly risk it over shelling out $7600!

Yeah, downside of aluminum case is a magnetic drain plug wouldn't help. Upside is, the shavings are weaker than the gears.
General upside, there is an oil filter.

The aluminum case is compromised.

Maybe Tesla will offer a the customer a goodwill gesture and replace the electric motor at no charge.

Aftermarket companies may offer a simple and affordable DIY solution as a preventative measure.

I guess after repaint a lot of construction equipment over the last 25 years, I’d say that’s just got a hole in it. If it were cracked I’d say it was compromised. A hole at the web of an aluminum casting is unlikely to be a high risk point of failure. You could likely even just put a rubber plumbing repair plug in it as is. I personally like threaded connections, but if I were in the field and this was a piece of equipment and we needed to finish a job, anything that would plug the hole would be in there until we had time to get it back to the shop. A rubber boat plug I’m thinking would be a good stop gap. Pop rivet with a piece of roof rubber membrane in the hole. Lots of things that would hold that.
