Hey all, I have been on other forums with my previous off-road SUVs. So I have been reading a lot about truck tires.

Disclaimer: I don’t know enough about AT3 EV version…but I would still not get them.

The AT3 came to market from design to production in ONE year. That is a very short time frame by most standard. (BFG KOs take 5 years or something to develop and test by comparison.)

AT3 splash onto the off-road scene quickly thanks to Joe Bacal endorsement. I am sure that he got a huge paycheck for that! Every forum was plastered with this.

In actual real world testing, Toyo AT3 is pretty bad in most areas per two independent comparisons! Noisy. Horrible in rain. Not great off-road in term of traction. And not comfortable on-road.

Here are the two tests.

From TireRack: (LT tire tested)

Toyo Open Country A/T III (Off-Road All-Terrain, LT265/70R17 E 121/118S)
  • What We Liked: The steering feels natural and it’s quite good in the snow.
  • What We’d Improve: It’s loud on the road and needs a substantial increase in wet traction.
  • Conclusion: A good option that could use some on-road refinement.

makes sense, if the tire can’t displace air then what chance does it have with water?

Road noise is a big deal, as we don’t have the engine rattle to mask it.

Remember, make sure whatever tires you all buy MUST support appropriate weight of CT. Either LT or XL rated in stock size. That should be #1 priority.

#2 priority…don’t buy tires that are inferior to stock. What is the point? Just to be different? I will never compromise my and family’s safety just to be different.

For me, I will ONLY buy tires from BIG brands (Michelin, BFG, Goodyear, Bridgestone, etc)…and within those brands, i only buy their premium line. Goodyear, for example, makes some crappy tires (e.g. original Duratracs) but their premium line is actually very good.

I have them in 35x12.5X18 in 10 ply and they have been great. I probably have 60,000 kms on them and haven't had a flat or issue even in the Arctic or Alaska. The only negative is that the first winter when they were new they were great, but the second winter they still had lots of tread left but were very slippery, the rubber must be harder at that depth or just less sipes. They are pretty much worn out now and I am 95% sure I'm going to replace them with the same tire, or go to Toyo M/T but I'm worried about noise; I had them on a 1 ton Ram diesel so I know they are quality tires as well.

I wouldn't put much weight in a review, who knows what union or interest is paying for a positive review, it would be like trusting the legacy media.

Look into the BFG K03s. I have them now. They are amazing, great in wet and snow, and look better(my opinion). The review on tire rack has them rated better than the AT3s.

Note that above are two reviews from different people.

TireRack reviews, in my opinion, have been fair…and generally puts a positive light on tested tires…so for them to point out something bad, it is significant.

Same with the YouTube review…these guys tested the tires all on same vehicle, same day.

And both reviews say the same issue.

YMMV.

Even when I was poor I would always buy the tires best matched to my needs, regardless of price. I would rather do without other things, spend less on prepared meals, drive fewer recreational miles or save less money than make do with lower quality tires. Because tires define the capabilities of whatever vehicle you are driving.

Some people seem to think the quality of a tire is defined by how many miles it will last. We have the technology to make tires that last for over 100,000 miles, but they are going to be crappy tires!

I'm really happy with the BFG KO3 on my late dad's ICE 1/2 ton truck. 12-15% increase in MPG compared to previous AT tires. Also did well last two winters with our dry Colorado snow and nutty I-70 traffic. Relatively quiet for an A/T tire.

The BFG KO3 and Pirelli Scorpion XTM AT Elect are top of my list for A/T tire without significant range hit, decent highway, light offroad, and snow performance. I will miss the efficiency and reasonable grip from the OEM highway Pirellis, but they are not really suitable for backcountry.

We have the non EV version on our CT and Sequoia with over 125,000 miles between 3 sets. Our CT is at 30,000 miles with them and we won’t use anything else, although I am tempted every season to try the BFG’s. They’ve been great in the snow so can’t complain.
